A Hero Theme Of The Lesson
This is one of the most interesting stories from “Malgudi Days’ written by R.K. Narayan. The story is about a boy named Swami. A weak-hearted boy was ironically respected as a hero. Swami was not a real but a ‘fake’ hero. He is afraid of sleeping alone in the darkness. His father doesn’t like Swami’s sleeping beside his granny like a baby. He forces him to sleep alone in his dark office room. The boy sweats in fear and has a nightmare. When he wakes up, he sees ‘something moving down’. Thinking him to be the devil, he digs his teeth into his flesh. The man turns out to be a notorious burglar. Swami’s act was done out of fear and desperation. But it made him a hero in the eyes of his classmates, teachers and the police.
A Hero Short Summary
News of a Boy Fighting a Tiger: Swami’s father was reading a newspaper. The newspaper published the report of a brave boy. He was returning home by the jungle path. He came face to face with a tiger there. The newspaper described the fight the boy had with the tiger. It also described how the boy saved himself by climbing up a tree. He staved there for half a day till the tiger was killed by the people. After reading the news, Swami’s father asked what he thought about the boy. Swami said that he must have been a very strong and grown-up person and not at all a boy. His father told him that a man might have the strength of an elephant and yet be a coward. A weak patient of TB. if he has courage, can do anything. Courage is everything. Strength and age are not important. Swami doubted it. He replied that in spite of all the courage he had, he would be helpless before a tiger.
Test of Swami’s courage: Swami’s father challenged him to prove his courage. He wanted to test if Swami could sleep alone that night in his office room. For him, it was a fearful idea. Swami always slept beside his granny. At first, he thought that his father was joking. He tried to change the topic. But soon Swami found that his father was determined. He told his father that he would start sleeping alone from the first of the next month. His father was adamant. He ordered him to sleep in his office room from that very day. When Swami found his father’s face covered by the raised newspaper, he slipped away silently to his bed.
Lay on Bed Pulling the Blanket Over his face: Granny was sitting up in her bed. She asked him if he was feeling sleepy. He only whispered. He asked her not to talk and let anyone call him even if the house was on fire. He snored under the blanket till it was pulled away by his father. Granny pleaded that he should not disturb Swami. His father rolled up his bed and asked him to follow him. He looked towards his mother for help. She asked her husband to let him sleep in the hall. Swami also pleaded that his office room was very dusty and there might be scorpions behind books. His father wouldn’t listen to him. He even refused to allow a lamp burning in the office room. He allowed him to keep the door open.
Felt Lonely, Pained and Angry: The night advanced. The silence in the house deepened. Swami’s heart began to beat faster. He remembered all the stories of devils and ghosts he had heard from the people. He remembered how his friend Mani had seen the devil in the banyan tree standing at the end of his street. Munisami’s father spat out blood as he was slapped on his cheek by the devil. He covered himself with the blanket as if it would save him from fear. He covered himself so completely that he could hardly breathe. Every moment he expected the devil to come up and clutch his throat. He got up and spread his bed under the bench and lay there. He felt much safer there. In his sleep he was troubled with nightmares. He saw in the dream that a tiger was chasing him. He tried to run away but his feet would not move.
Hugged and Bit a Burglar: Swami tried to open his eyes but his eye-lids would not open. When he opened his eyes, he felt very lonely. He stared in darkness. He saw something moving down. He lay gazing at it in horror. He realized that his end had come. The devil would pull him out and tear him to pieces. In desperation, he hugged it with all his might. He dug his teeth deep into its flesh. A loud cry of pain escaped in the air. In a moment Swami’s father, cook and the servant came in, carrying light. They fell on the burglar who lay there with a bleeding ankle.
Congratulations Come Showering on Swami: Next day, Swami received congratulations from everywhere. His classmates looked at him with respect. His teachers congratulated him by patting his back. The police was grateful to him as he had bitten into the flesh of one of the most notorious burglars of the district. The inspector asked him to join the police when he would be a grown-up man.
Not a Real but a Fake Hero: Swami’s father returned home from the club. He asked where he was sleeping. He was told that Swami was sleeping with his granny again. Swami’s father protested but his mother lost her temper. She asked her husband to let him sleep where he liked. Her husband only warned her that she was spoiling him. Swami kept lying under the blanket listening to the conversation. He was not a real but a fake hero who was still afraid of sleeping alone in darkness.

यह आर.के. नारायण द्वारा लिखित तथा ‘मालगुडी डेज’ से ली गई सर्वाधिक दिलचस्प कहानियों में से एक है। यह कहानी एक लड़के स्वामी के बारे में है। एक कमजोर हृदय का लड़का हास्यास्पद रूप से एक हीरो के रूप में आदर पाता था। स्वामी वस्तुत: वास्तविक नहीं, बल्कि एक नकली हीरो था। वह अंधेरे में अकेले सोने से घबराता है। उसके। पिता एक शिशु की तरह उसे दादी के बगल में सोना पसंद नहीं करते। वह उसे अपने अंधेरे से भरे कार्यालय में सोने को बाध्य करते हैं। लड़का भय के मारे पसीने-पसीने हो जाता है। तथा दु:स्वप्न देखता है। जब वह उठा तो उसने देखा। कि कुछ चीज नीचे की ओर जा रही हैं। उसे एक शैतान समझ उसने अपने दाँतों को उसके मांस में घुसा देता है। वह आदमी एक कुख्यात चोर निकलता है। स्वामी का यह कृत्य भय रहित तथा निर्भीकतापूर्ण था। लेकिन अपने इस कृत्य के कारण वह अपने सहपाठियों, शिक्षकों तथा पुलिस की नजरों में हीरो बन जाता है।
A Hero संक्षिप्त सारांश
शेर से लड़ने वाले लड़के का समाचार: स्वामी के पिता एक अखबार को पढ़ रहे थे। समाचार-पत्र ने एक बहादुर लड़के की कहानी को छापा था। वह जंगल के रास्ते से होकर घर वापिस आ रहा था। उसका वहाँ एक शेर से आमना-सामना हो गया। समाचार-पत्र ने उस लड़ाई का वर्णन किया, जो लड़के ने शेर के साथ की थी। उसने यह भी वर्णन किया कि किसी प्रकार से उसने एक पेड़ के ऊपर चढ़कर अपनी जान बचाई थी। वह पेड़ पर आधा दिन बैठा रहा, जब तक लोगों ने शेर को मार नहीं डाला। खबर पढ़ने के बाद स्वामी के पिता ने पूछा कि वह उस लड़के के बारे में क्या सोचता है। स्वामी ने कहा कि वह एक बहुत ही शक्तिशाली और बड़ी उम्र का आदमी रहा होगा, एक लड़का तो बिल्कुल भी नहीं। उसके पिता ने कहा कि चाहे एक आदमी के पास एक हाथी का बल क्यों न हो, फिर भी वह एक कायर हो। सकता है। बी० का एक कमजोर व्यक्ति, यदि उसके पास साहस है, (तो) वह कुछ भी कर सकता है। साहस ही सब कुछ है। शक्ति और आयु महत्वपूर्ण नहीं हैं। स्वामी को इस पर शंका थी। उसने उत्तर दिया कि सारी हिम्मत के होने के बावजूद, वह एक शेर के सामने असहाय हो जाएगा।
स्वामी के साहस की परीक्षाः स्वामी के पिता ने उसे चुनौती दी कि वह अपने साहस की परीक्षा दे। वह यह परीक्षा लेना चाहता था कि स्वामी उस रात उसके दफ्तर के कमरे में सो सकता था कि नहीं। उसके लिए यह एक डरावना प्रस्ताव था। स्वामी तो हमेशा अपनी दादी के पास सोया करता था। पहले तो उसने सोचा कि उसके पिता मजाक (ही) कर रहे हैं। उसने विषय को बदलने का प्रयत्न किया। लेकिन शीघ्र ही स्वामी ने पाया कि उसके पिता दृढ़ हैं। उसने अपने पिता को कहा कि वह अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से वहाँ सोना शुरू कर देगा। उसके पिता अडिग थे। उन्होंने उसी दिन से उसके दफ्तर में सोने का आदेश सुना दिया। जब स्वामी ने यह देखा कि उसके पिता का चेहरा ऊपर उठे हुए अखबार से ढका हुआ है, (तो) वह चुपके से अपने बिस्तर की ओर खिसक गया।
चेहरे को लपेटे बिस्तर में पड़ा रहाः दादी अपने बिस्तर पर बैठी हुई थी। उसने स्वामी से पूछा कि क्या उसे नींद आ रही है। उसने सिर्फ कानाफूसी की। स्वामी ने उसे चुप रहने और चाहे घर में आग भी लग जाये तो किसी को भी (उसे) पुकारने देने के लिये मना कर देने को कहा। वह कम्बले के नीचे खुर्राटा मारता रहा जब तक उसके पिता ने उसे (कम्बले को) खींच कर दूर नहीं फेंक दिया। दादी ने याचना की कि वह स्वामी को परेशान न करे। उसके पिता ने उसके बिस्तर को लपेटा और उसे अपने पीछे चले आने को कहा। उसने सहायता के लिये अपनी माँ की ओर देखा। उसने अपने पति को कहा कि वह उसे हॉल (बड़े कमरे) में सोने दे। स्वामी ने भी याचना की कि उसके दफ्तर का कमरा बहुत धूल भरा है और वहाँ किताबों के पीछे बिच्छू हो सकते हैं। उसके पिता ने उसकी एक न सुनी और दफ्तर के कमरे में एक दीपक जलाकर रखने से भी मना कर दिया। उसने दरवाजे को खुला रखने की अनुमति दे दी।
(स्वयं को) अकेला, दुखी और क्रोधित महसूस किया: रात आगे बढ़ी। घर में चुप्पी गहरा गयी। स्वामी का दिल और तेजी से धड़कने लगा। लोगों से भूतों और शैतानों की जो कहानियाँ उसने सुनी थी, सभी याद आ गयी। उसे याद आया कि किस प्रकार उसके. मित्र ने गली के आखिर में खड़े हुए वृक्ष में शैतान को देखा था। (जब) शैतान ने मुनिसामी के पिता के गाल पर थप्पड़ मारा और कैसे वह खून थूकने लगा था। उसने अपने आप को कम्बल से इस प्रकार ढक लिया जैसे वह उसकी डर से रक्षा करेगा। उसने अपने को ऐसे पूरी तरह ढक लिया कि उसे साँस लेने में भी कठिनाई होने लगी। हर क्षण वह शैतान के आने और उसके गले को दबोचने की आशंका करने लगा। वह उठ खड़ा हुआ और बैंच के नीचे बिस्तर लगा कर वहाँ लेट गया। वहाँ उसे स्वयं को काफी सुरक्षित अनुभव दिया। नींद में उसे दु:स्वप्नों ने तंग करना शुरू कर दिया। उसने स्वप्न में देखा कि एक शेर उसका पीछा कर रहा है। उसने भागने का प्रयत्न किया परन्तु उसके पैर उठे ही नहीं।
एक सेंधमार को आगोश में लेकर काट लियाः स्वामी ने अपनी आँखों को खोलने का प्रयत्न किया किन्तु उसकी आँखें खुलती ही न थीं। जब उसने आँखें खोली तो उसने स्वयं को बहुत अकेला महसूस किया। उसने अंधेरे में घूरा। उसे कोई चीज नीचे की ओर आती दिखायी पड़ी। वह भयग्रस्त लेटा उसे देखता रहा। उसे महसूस हुआ कि उसका अंत आ गया है। शैतान उसे खींच कर बाहर निकाल लेगा और फाड़ कर उसके चिथड़े-कर देगा। हताशा में, उसने उसे अपनी पूरी शक्ति के साथ बाँहों में जकड़ लिया। उसने उसके मांस में अपने दाँत गहरे गड़ा दिए। हवा में पीड़ा भरी एक ऊँची चीख बाहर निकल गयी। क्षणभर में ही स्वामी का पिता, रसोईया और नौकर-रोशनी लिए अंदर आ गए। वे सेंधभार (चोर) पर टूट पड़े जो वहाँ खून निकलते घायल टकने को लिए पड़ा हुआ था।
स्वामी पर बधाइयों की बौछार होने लगी: अगले दिन, स्वामी को हर जगह से बधाइयाँ मिलने लगीं। उसके सहपाठी उसे सम्मान की दृष्टि से देखते थे। उसके अध्यापकों ने उसे धन्यवाद देते हुए उस की पीठ थपथपाई। पुलिस उसके प्रति कृतज्ञ थी क्योंकि उसने जिले के एक सब से बदनाम सेंध मार के माँस को काट लिया था। इंस्पेक्टर ने उसे जब वह बड़ा हो जाए (तो) पुलिस में भर्ती हो जाने के लिये कहा।
असली नहीं, लेकिन नकली नायक ( हीरो): स्वामी के पिता क्लब से घर वापिस आए। उन्होंने पूछा कि वह कहाँ सो रहा है। उसे बताया गया कि स्वामी फिर से अपनी दादी के पास सो रहा है। स्वामी के पिता ने विरोध किया परन्तु उसकी माँ का मिज़ाज बिगड़ गया। उसने अपने पति को कहा कि जहाँ वह चाहे, उसे वहाँ सोने दे। उसके पति ने केवल उसे चेतावनी दी कि वह उसे बिगाड़ रही है। स्वामी इस वर्तालाप को सुनते हुए कम्बल के नीचे (दुबका) पड़ा रहा। वह असली नहीं परन्तु नकली हीरो (नायक) था जो अभी भी अंधेरे में अकेला सोने से डरता था।

एकाएक, उसने देखा कि अंधेरे में कुछ घूम रहा है। उसे ऐसा महसूस हुआ जैसे शैतान उसे फाड़कर टुकड़े-टुकड़े करने वाला है। - He caught the moving object and dug his teeth deep into its flesh. A cry of pain was heard.
उसने उसे घूमती हुई चीज को पकड़ लिया तथा अपने दाँतों को उसके मांस में गड़ा दिया। दर्द से कराहने की एक आवाज आई। - It turned out to be a burglar. The people of the house caught him.
वह एक सेंधमार निकला। घर के लोगों ने उसे पकड़ लिया। - Next day, everyone congratulated him. The police was grateful as he had bitten one of the notorious burglar of the district.
अगले दिन, सभी लोगों ने उसे बधाई दी। पुलिस ने जिले के एक कुख्यात सेंधमार को पकड़वाने के लिए उसे आभार व्यक्त किया। - The next day Swami was again lying with his granny. His father protested and asked her not to spoil him. But his granny stood by Swami.

Passage-1: (Page 59)
For Swami events took an unexpected turn.
Father looked over the newspaper he was reading under the hall lamp and said,
‘Swami, listen to this: “News is to hand of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger ……………….”
“The paragraph described the fight the boy had with the tiger and his flight up a tree where he stayed for half a day till some people came that way and killed the tiger.
स्वामी के लिए घटनाओं ने एक अप्रत्याशित मोड़ ले लिया।
हाल (बड़े कमरे) में रखे लैम्प के प्रकाश के नीचे पिता ने पढ़ते हुए, समाचार-पत्र पर देखते हुए कहा,
‘स्वामी, इसको सुनोः “यह समाचार गाँव के एक बहादुर लड़के के बहादुरी का है, जबकि वह जंगल के रास्ते से होता हुआ घर लौट रहा था, तो एक शेर से आमना-सामना हो गया ……………….”
‘उस अखबार के अनुच्छेद में लड़के ने उस शेर से जो लड़ाई की उसका तथा उसके एक पेड़ पर चढ़ जाने का भी वर्णन था, जहाँ वह आधे दिन तक बैठा रहा जब तक कुछ लोग उस रास्ते से गुजरे और उन्होंने शेर को मार न डाला।

He had always slept beside his granny in the passage and any change in this arrangement kept him trembling and awake all night.
He hoped at first that his father was only joking. He mumbled weakly, yes’, and tried to change the subject;
‘ताकत को तो छोड़ो, क्या तुम यह सिद्ध कर सकते हो कि तुम में साहस है? मुझे यह देखने दो कि क्या आज रात तुम मेरे दफ्तर के कमरे में सो सकते हो।’
स्वामी ने सोचा कि यह तो भयंकर प्रस्ताव है।
वह तो सदा गलियारे में अपनी दादी के पास सोता आया था और इस इंतजाम में किसी भी प्रकार का परिवर्तन उसे रात भर कपकपाँता और जगाये रखता था।
उसे पहले तो यह आशा थी कि उसका पिता उसके साथ मजाक कर रहा है। उसने धीमें से बुडबुडाते हुए कहा ‘हाँ’, और फिर उसने विषय को बदलने का प्रयत्न किया।

स्वामी को अनुभव हुआ कि मामला उसके नियंत्रण के बाहर जा चुका है एक चुनौती से ले कर अब यह एक आदेश बन चुका था। वह अपने पिता के इन मामलों में दृढ़ निश्चय को जानता था।

स्वामी ने स्वयं को मानवता से कटा हुआ महसूस किया।
वह दुखी और क्रोध में था। जो निर्दयता के चिह्न उसने अपने पिता में देखे, वह उन्हें पसंद नहीं करता था। उसे शेर की वह कहानी छापने के लिए, अखबार से भी घृणा हो गयी।
