As Bhagwat Singh ji was about to get up after taking his meal, Dhapu told him with respect that Binniji wanted to ask if Sita should go to school. But we should remember that Sita is our responsibility.”

Question 3.
Relate the incidents that led to Sita’s going to school.
Answer:
After Lakshmi left the haveli, Sita mostly played with Vijay. One day while going to school, Vijay caught Sita’s hands and pulled her from the behind the pillar where she stood shivering. She said, “Come to school with me; it would be great fun. If I can go to school why can’t you ?” Also, the miserable condition of Sita touched Geeta to the quick. She insisited that Sita must go to school.

Moreover the other servants resented the idea that gave Sita this extra privilege: Some women were of the view that servants’ daughters should serve in the haveli, so that physical labour would enable them to adapt to the village life which they were to lead later in life.

Answer:
When Gokul saw Vijay Bai sa and Sita, he lowered his stick and reverently folded his hands. He politely said, “Vijay Bai saheb, do not eat the unripe mangoes. You will have a sore throat. Those wicked children leave nothing to ripen. They carry everything to their mothers who grow fat on stolen mangoes. One day worms will eat their bodies. Then they will learn that stealing is a sin.”

She does not want that anyone should think that Binniji can take any decision without the elders’ advice.

Question 12.
What did Geeta think after listening to the old women gathered at Gopalji’s haveli ?
Answer:
Geeta thought that all those old women lived in the same past. They were still proud of the feudal glory. With the changing times they had not changed. They still continued to cling to their customs and traditions without realising that most of them were outdated and had lost their utility. They were still the victims of the age old superstitions. Tradition was their fortress which protected them from outside influence.

The servants’ children were very happy on the arrival of warmer days, and dusty winds. The trees behind the haveli were laden with fruits. Children threw stones at the branches to bring down the fruits.

They were just dry.

Answer:
Kantaji told Binniji that she had told her mother about the gold cemented in the wall of her grandfather’s farm house. This was revealed to her by her grandfather and told her (Kantaji) to take it all because she was married to a poor family. Her mother was simple and trusting. She told her (Kanta’s) father where the gold was. She was a true Hindu wife and worshipped her husband though he did nothing for his livelihood. When her father died all the money naturally went to her brother. Her brother’s wife looked after her mother for a few months. Then she resented spending money on her. She wore torn and patched clothes but never opened her mouth against her daughter in-law.

So she brought the rotis back home. Her father might have thought that she did not eat the rotis because there were no vegetables to eat them with. Gangaram was full of shame for his misunderstanding and went away with bowed head.

She smiled and wanted to know about the old woman who showed so much charity to Sita. She lightly dismissed it as an absurd gossip. She argued what such a gang would get by kidnapping Sita who had neither rich parents nor physical attraction to be of any use to the kidnapper.
