After Della sacrifices her beautiful hair, she has a fear that Jim will not like her. She thinks that she is looking like a Coney Island chorus girl. But she can do nothing with a dollar and eighty-seven cents. Out of fear she doubles the fob chain in her hand and sits on the corner of the table near the door that Jim always enters. When she hears his step on the stairway down on the first flight, she turns white for just a moment. According to her habit, she says little silent prayers about the simplest everyday things. She prays that Jim might think that she is still pretty. When Jim looks at her with fixed eyes, she cannot read his expression and she is terrified.

Queen of Sheba was the famous queen who visited King Solomon, the king of Israel. King Solomon was regarded as the wisest one. In the story, both of them are supposed to be envious of the possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch and the other was Della’s beautiful hair. If the Queen of Sheba had lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out of the window some day to dry just to depreciate. Her Majesty’s jewels and gifts. In the same way, if King Solomon had been the janitor, with all his treasure piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.

There were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch. He got it from his father and his father got it from his grandfather. It was so beautiful that the King of Solomon would be jealous of it for not having. Though he had all the wealth yet he did not have that gold watch. He would pluck his beard at envy. The other was Della’s beautiful, long hair. When Della’s hair fell, they looked like a rippling and shining cascade of brown waters. It reached below her knees and made itself almost a garment for her. If the Queen of Sheba had seen her hair personally, she would have been envious.

The Magi were wonderfully wise men. They brought precious gifts to the infant Jesus. The gifts were the tokens of their love and respect for Jesus. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. They were wise, so their gifts were also wise ones. All who give and receive the wisest gifts are called Magi. The author called Jim and Della the Magi because they sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. They showed utter devotion and respect for each other. They were very poor and did not have enough money to buy gifts for each other but they loved each other so much that they did not hesitate to sell even their most valuable possessions. They were the Magi as their love for each other was limitless.

I got into such a dilemma when I have to choose the gift on the occasion of the birthday of my cousin. At that time he was only 17 years old. I went to the market and searched for all the shops but I failed to decide. In the meantime, I remembered one thing that could be very important to him. It was a saving set. The door opened and Jim came in. He looked at Della. As Jim saw that Della had her hair cut, he was as immovable as a setter at the scent of a quail. His eyes were fixed on Della and there was a mysterious expression in them. At first, he could not understand the reality of the situation. When Della said to him that she had her hair cut off and sold, he could not believe on his ears and eyes. It took him some time to understand that she had sold her hair. Then he realized that the present he bought for Della was of no use. Jim looked about the room curiously but there was no hair. Della told him that he did not need to look for it.

Jim purchased a set of combs for Della as Christmas gift. She had been craving for them for a long time. She used to look at them in a Broadway window. But she knew that they were so expensive that she could not buy them. They were very beautiful. They were made of pure tortoise shell. They had jewelled rims. They had the perfect colour to match the beautiful vanished hair. Della purchased a platinum fob chain for Jim. It was simple and chaste in design and worthy of Jim’s gold watch. It showed its value by substance alone and not by meretricious ornamentation. It would be useful for Jim because Jim used an old leather strap in place of a chain. It made the gold watch ugly so he looked at it on the shy.

Even after close dealing with the grocer, the vegetable seller and the butcher, Della could save just one dollar and eighty-seven cents which shows that they were very poor. The shabby little couch and an electric bell which produced no sound also hint at their poverty. And above all, the way they bought Christmas gifts for each-other shows their weak economic state. They had to sell their most valuable possessions for buying gifts for each other. Della had to sell her beautiful hair and Jim had to sell his gold watch. But they did not know that their presence would become useless after selling their possessions.

Della was overwhelmed with joy but remembering that she no longer had her beautiful hair, she began to weep. She hugged the combs to her bosom, smiled and said that her hair grew very fast. After that, she showed her gift – a platinum fob chain for Jim’s Gold watch which he had sold for Della’s gift. Thus they sacrificed their most prized possessions.
