एकालाप, नाटकीय एकालाप, और स्वगत भाषण को शब्दकोश में साहित्यिक सन्दर्भ में देखिए। एकालाप व स्वगत भाषण के बीच अन्तर स्पष्ट कीजिए।
Answer:
(A) Monologue:
A long speech by one person during a conversation that stops other people from speaking or expressing an opinion.

(B) Dramatic Monologue:
A dramatic story, especially in verse, told or performed by one person.

(C) Soliloquy:
A speech in a play in which a character who is alone on the stage, speaks his or her thoughts; the act of speaking thoughts in this way.

Difference between Monologue and soliloquy:
A monologue is delivered before the other actors present on the stage and they are meant to hear it. While soliloquy is delivered by a character who is alone on the stage and it means that only the audience hears it.

B. Blank Verse:
Blank verse is the poetry written with the help of regular metrical but unrhymed lines, almost in iambic pentameter. It is probably the most common form in English poetry. Like other famous writers, William Shakespeare wrote his plays and sonnets in blank verse and “The Seven Ages of Man” is a fine example.

lambic Pentameter:
The term describes the rhythm the words form in a line of verse. It is measured in small groups of syllables called “feet”. In English, the word iambic” refers to the types of the foot which has an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Pentameter means that a line has five such “feet”. Iambic rhythms come relatively naturally in English. A standard line of ‘lambic pentameter has five iambic “feet” in a row: (from William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2) When I do count the clock that tells the time. (Notation/scansion of a standard line in iambic pentameter).’

lambic Pentameter:

Monologue:
When, on the stage, there is one speaker only and the rest are the listeners but they do exist. The dramatic monologue was popularized by Robert Browning.

एकालाप (स्वकथन):
जब मंच पर सिर्फ एक वक्ता होता है और शेष श्रोता होते हैं लेकिन वे मौजूद होते हैं। एकल संवाद को Robert Browning के द्वारा लोकप्रियता मिली।

Soliloquy:
It is different from the monologue. It is a method, stage technique, often used in drama when a character speaks to himself or herself. He shares the thoughts or feelings with the audience. The other characters keep silent and/or disregarded by the speaker. Shakespeare has used some of the most powerful soliloquies in his plays namely Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, Julius Caesar and many other plays.

Cataloguing:
It means listing of things on a certain topic or issue. Notice how melancholy Jacques catalogues the seven stages of human life.

सूचीबद्ध करना:
इसका अर्थ है किसी निश्चित शीर्षक या विषय पर चीजों की सूची बनाना। ध्यान दीजिये कि विषादग्रस्त (चिन्ताग्रस्त) जेक्स किस प्रकार मानव जीवन की सात अवस्थाओं (चरणों या काल) को सूचीबद्ध (सूची बनाना) करता है।

Tragi-Comedy:
William Shakespeare has not written pure comedies or tragedies. Comic scenes appear in tragedies while tragic scenes appear in comedies for example role of Fool in ‘King Lear’ or Melancholy Jacques in ‘As You Like It’. This enhances the effect of comic scenes as well as tragic scenes by way of contrast against each other. Moreover, Shakespeare imitated the world or human nature where one person’s gain is the loss of another and joys and sorrows are not separated but intermingled.

दुःखान्त-सुखान्त:
शेक्सपियर ने विशुद्ध रूप से (पूर्ण रूप से) सुखान्त या दुखान्त नाटक नहीं लिखे हैं। दुखान्त नाटकों में हँसी के दृश्य मिलते हैं जबकि सुखान्त नाटकों में दुखद दृश्य मिलते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए ‘King Lear’ में मूर्ख की भूमिका या ‘As You Like It’ में जेक्स की भूमिका। इस विरोधाभास के माध्यम से यह सुखान्त व दुखान्त दृश्यों के प्रभाव को बढ़ाता है। इसके अतिरिक्त शेक्सपियर ने उस स्थिति में संसार या मानव स्वभाव का अनुकरण किया है जहाँ एक व्यक्ति का लाभ दूसरे व्यक्ति की हानि है, और खुशियों व दुखों को अलग-अलग नहीं रखा है बल्कि एक-दूसरे को परस्पर मिलाया है।

Activity 3: Speech Activity
The king along with his followers including Jacques has been banished from the kingdom and living in a forest where these philosophical ideas about human misery are expressed. Observe various stages of a man’s life in your neighbourhood. Try to correlate them with the description given in the poem and prepare a speech based on your observation for your class.

Answer:
My dear classmates, today I am going to present my views on various stages of a man’s life as described by Shakespeare in the poem ‘As You Like It’. When I see Monu, an infant in my neighbourhood, crying and puking in the arms of his nurse, I feel that in this stage man is really totally dependent on others. And Monu’s elder brother who is never willing to go to school reminds me of the complaining schoolboy of the poem. And whenever I see Jeetu’s grandfather without teeth, eyes, taste etc, lying on the bed, I feel that Shakespeare has rightly divided man’s life into seven stages.
Thank you
