Question 1.
Why do we feel cool in forests ?
Answer:
There are many small pores present on the surface of plant leaves. These pores are called stomata. Water come out in the form of water vapours from these stomata (transpiration). Due to this the moisture content of the air increases. This is called humidity.Due to plants and trees the humidity increases, that is why we feel cool in forest.

Question 2.
How do forests increase the fertility of the soil?
Answer:
In forest old leaves and branches fall on the ground. The micro organisms (bacteria) present in the soil decompose them. Due to which a layer of decomposed matter deposits on the surface of the soil, which we call Humus. Humus is a high quality manure, which increases the fertility of the soil.

Question 3.
What is soil erosion? How do you prevent it?
Answer:
Rain and storms (strong winds) carry away the upper fertile surface of the soil. This removal of top surface of the soil by rain and winds is called soil erosion. In forests, the roots of trees hold the soil around it tightly due to which fertile soil is not removed by air or water current.

Question 4.
How do forests contribute (help) in retaining soil moisture and ground water level ?
Answer:
Due to the humus formed by plants in forests, rain water seeps in to the ground slowly, which maintains constantly moisture in the soil and sufficient water is available to the plants. Forests reduce flow of water current giving sufficient time to the soil to absorb water which increase the ground*water level.

Question 5.
