आज हिन्दुओं द्वारा वर्ण व्यवस्था को काम में नहीं लिया जा रहा है। उदाहरणार्थ, ब्राह्मणों ने ज्ञान के व्यवसाय को छोड़ दिया है। उन्होंने अन्य व्यवसाय प्रारम्भ कर दिये हैं। इस प्रकार, हमारे शास्त्रों में परिभाषित व वर्णितानुसार वर्णव्यवस्था को काम में नहीं लिया जा रहा है।

(C) Answer the following questions in 60-80 words each:

Question 1.
Why does Gandhiji say that Hinduism with untouchability stinks in my nostrils?
गांधीजी यह क्यों कहते हैं कि छुआछूत वाला हिन्दू-धर्म उनके नथुनों में बदबू फैलाती है?
Answer:
Gandhiji says that nowhere in Hinduism it is laid down that untouchability should prevail in society. If we continue the custom of untouchability in the name of religion, the gravity of our sins is further increased. So the Hinduism stinks in his nostrils. He says that this certainly cannot be the Hindu religion. It was through the Hindu religion that he learnt to respect Christianity and Islam. So the Hinduism with untouchability cannot be true Hinduism. It is like a thing rotten and stinking in nostrils.

Question 2.
How, according to Gandhiji, can Sanatana Dharma be saved ?
गांधीजी के अनुसार सनातन धर्म की रक्षा कैसे की जा सकती है?
Answer:
According to Gandhiji, the Sanatana Dharma will not be saved by defending every verse printed in the scriptures. It will be saved only by putting into action the principles enunciated in them-principles that are eternal. In these scriptures a number of verses are apocryphal and a number of them are quite meaningless. So we should follow only eternal principles, not verses so that the Sanatana Dharma can be saved.

Question 3.
What indicators of hatred do Gandhiji narrate in the essay?
गांधीजी इस निबन्ध में घृणा के कौनसे चिह्नों (सूचकों) का वर्णन करते हैं?
Answer:
Gandhiji says that untouchables are not allowed to enter our compartment. If by mistake one does so, he will be beaten or abused. The tea-seller will not hand him tea. The shopkeeper will not sell him goods. Moreover, we will not care to touch him even if he were dying. We give him our leavings to eat and our torn and soiled garments to wear. No Hindu is willing to teach him. He cannot dwell in a proper house. On the road, out of fear of our wrath, he has to proclaim his untouchability repeatedly. In this way, Gandhiji narrates indicators of hatred in the essay.

Activity 3 : Grammar Past tense
अंग्रेजी में भूतकाल के कार्यों को बताने के लिए क्रिया के चार भिन्न रूप हैं।

The simple past

He played in the match yesterday.
She drovė to Mumbai last week.
The trees shook violently in the strong wind.
Water flowed down the slope.
Verghese enrolled for a course in spoken English.

Simple past tense का प्रयोग अतीत की आदत सम्बन्धी गतिविधी या अतीत में नियमित रूप से या बार-बार हुए कार्यों को इंगित करने के लिए किया जाता है। उदाहरणार्थ
James played cricket when he was in school. I walked to school every morning when I was a child.

He read the book in 1986. (past simple tense) He has read the book and can talk to us about it. (present perfect tense)

The past progressive tense
Past progressive tense में was या were के साथ क्रिया की progressive form (+ ung) का प्रयोग होता है। उदाहरणार्थ
I was reading a book at 9.00 p.m. last night. My brothers were playing cards when the fight started.

Inspector :
What were you doing at 8.30 last night?
Man : Sir, I was watching a television serial with my friend at his house.
ध्यान दीजिए कि इन्स्पेक्टर तथा उस व्यक्ति द्वारा क्रिया के कौन-से रूप प्रयोग में लिए जा रहे हैं (क्रमशः were doing तथा was watching) यहाँ सहायक क्रियाएँ ‘was/ were’, जो Past Tense में हैं, क्रिया की participle form (‘doing’, ‘watching) के साथ प्रयोग की गई हैं। जो यह दर्शाती हैं कि कार्य प्रगति पर था। कुल मिलाकर ये दोनों भूतकाल में जारी कार्य को प्रदर्शित करती हैं।

The past perfect tense
निम्न वाक्य को देखिए
When I met my friend in the canteen yesterday, he had eaten his lunch already.

After I had read the newspaper, I tidied the room.
When I had read the newspaper, Í tidied the room.

The past perfect progressive tense
निम्न उदाहरण को देखिए –
Yesterday, while I was writing a letter, my friend telephoned from Mumbai. He told me that he had been trying to contact me for the past two days. क्रिया ‘had been trying’ past perfect progressive tense में है जिसका प्रयोग उन कार्यों को बताने के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में प्रारम्भ होकर भूतकाल में ही किसी निश्चित समय तक निरन्तर चले। ध्यान दीजिए कि यहाँ क्रिया के present participle form (trying) का प्रयोग सहायक क्रिया ‘had+been’ के साथ किया जाता है। निम्न दो वाक्यों की तुलना कीजिए

Arjun was reading when Tanvi rang the bell. Arjun had been reading when Tanvi rang the bell.

I switched off the over-heated engine, which had been running for six hours.
It had been raining since three in the morning, and the plane could not take off.
The country’s economy had been improving steadily until last year’s drought.

Activity 4: Speech Activity
Divide the class into groups and ask each group member to deliver a speech on “The Sin of Untouchability and our Dharamshastras”. Your speech must cover as to how our Dharamshastras exercise a ban on the practice of untouchability.
कक्षा को दलों में बाँटिए और प्रत्येक दल के सदस्य से छुआछूत का पाप और हमारे धर्मशास्त्र विषय पर भाषण देने के लिए कहिए। आपके भाषण में इसका उल्लेख होना चाहिए कि हमारे धर्मशास्त्र किस प्रकार छुआछूत के व्यवहार का निषेध करते हैं।
Answer:
‘The Sin of Untouchability and our Dharmashastras’
There is no doubt about the urgent need for eradication of the sin of untouchability, which is universally considered as a blot on the Hindu society. Neither in the Vedas nor in the Dharmashastras, we find any sanction for this abominable practice. While describing the need to maintain physical cleanliness and ceremonial purity on certain occasions, a kind of untouchability has been advocated by our scriptures. However, this untouchability has nothing to do with the brand which the Hindu society has been stupid enough to enforce during the last few centuries.

It is interesting that the same scriptures tell that even such untouchability, need not be observed in holy places and on holy occasions or during national emergencies. Some of the Dharmashastras go to the extent of not permitting even the lowest of the castes and sections of the society to enter temples. Hence it can be safely asserted that untouchability current in our society is the handiwork of selfish people with a narrow vision.

Long Answer Type Questions
Answer the following questions in 60 words each :

Question 1.
What does Gandhiji say about the practice of Varna system by Hinduism today?
गांधीजी आज हिन्दू धर्म द्वारा व्यवहार में ली जा रही वर्ण व्यवस्था के बारे में क्या कहते हैं?
Answer:
Gandhiji says that Varna system is not practised by Hinduism today, in accordance with its definition and tradition. Those, who call themselves Brahmins have given up the pursuit of learning. They have taken to various other occupations. The same is true more or less of the other varnas. In this way, the Hindu individuals occupying the traditional assigned varnas, have given up their assigned occupations and have taken to other ones. The varnas have only been limited to their names, not occupations.

Question 2.
In which circumstances do untouchables become touchables? And how do we behave with them in such circumstances?
किन परिस्थितियों में अछूत लोग स्पृश्य हो जाते हैं? ऐसी परिस्थितियों में हम उनके साथ कैसा बर्ताव करते हैं?
Answer:
We touch untouchables in the trains. They are employed in mills where we touch them without the least compunction. Untouchables have found admission in the Fergusson and Baroda colleges. Society puts no hindrance so far as these matters are concerned. In English and Muslim homes, they are politely welcomed. And we have no hesitation in touching Englishmen and Muslims. When these very untouchables are converted to Christianity, we dare not treat them as untouchables.

Question 3.
What does Gandhiji appeal the writers? गांधीजी लेखकों से क्या अपील करते हैं? ।
Answer:
Gandhiji says that India is venerated for its tapasya, purity, compassion and other virtues, it is also a playground of licence, sin, barbarity and other vices. At such a juncture he asks the fraternity of writers to gird up their loins to oppose and root out hypocricy. He appeals to them to join the sacred work that was taken up in Godhra, greeting it as such, and participate in the effort that may be undertaken in this cause, so that sixty million people may not break away from us in despair.

Passages for Comprehension

Read the following passages carefully and answer the questions that follow :

Passage 1
That the untouchables are a separate class is a blot on India’s forehead. The caste system is a hindrance, not a sin. But untouchability is a sin, a great crime, and if Hinduism does not destroy this serpent while there is yet time, it will be devoured by it. The untouchables must not be considered as falling outside Hinduism. They should be treated as respectable members of Hindu society and should be assigned their varnas according to I their vocations. The varna system, as I have defined and described it, is not practised by Hinduism today.

Those, who call themselves Brahmins have given up the pursuit of learning. They have taken to various other occupations. The same is true more or less of the other varnas. As a matter of fact, owing to our subjection to foreign rule, we are all slaves and are, in the eyes of the Westerners, untouchables lower even than the Sudras. Why does God permit this atrocity? Ravana was a rakshasa, but this rakshasi of untouchability is even more terrible than Ravana. And when we worship this rakshasi in the name of religion, the gravity of our sins is further increased.

Passage 2
Why does God permit this atrocity? Ravana was a rakshasa, but this rakshasi of untouchability is even more terrible than Ravana. And when we worship this rakshasi in the name of religion, the gravity of our sins is further increased. Even the slavery of the Negroes is better than this. This religion, if it can be called such, stinks in my nostrils. This certainly cannot be the Hindu religion. It was through the Hindu religion that I learnt to respect Christianity and Islam. How then can this sin be a part of the Hindu religion? But then what is to be done? I shall put up a lone fight if need be, against this hypocrisy. Alone I shall undergo penance and die with His name on my lips. It is possible that I may go mad and say that I am mistaken in my views on the question of untouchability, that I was guilty of a sin in calling untouchability a sin of Hinduism. Then you should take it that I am frightened, that I cannot face the challenge and that I change my views out of cowardice. You should take it, in that event, that I am in delirium. In my humble opinion, the dirt that soils the scavenger is physical and can be easily removed. But there are those who have become soiled with untruth and hypocrisy, and this dirt is so subtle that it is very difficult to remove it. If there are any untouchables, they are the people who are filled with untruth and hypocrisy.

Passage 3
The Sanatana Dharma will not be saved by defending every verse printed in the scriptures. It will be saved only by putting into action the principles enunciated in them- principles that are eternal. All the religious leaders with whom I have had occasion to discuss the matter have agreed in this. All the preachers who are counted among the learned and who are revered in society have clearly announced that our treatment of untouchables has no sanction other than the custom to which it conforms. To be truthful, no one really follows this custom. We touch them in the trains. They are employed in mills where we touch them without the least compunction. Untouchables have found admission in the Fergusson and the Baroda Colleges. Society puts no hindrance so far as these matters are concerned. In English and Muslim homes they are politely welcomed. And we have no hesitation in touching Englishmen and Muslims; in fact, we feel a pride in shaking hands with many of these. When these same untouchables are converted to Christianity, we dare not treat them as untouchables. Thus, it is impossible for a thoughtful Hindu, even if he feels differently in the matter to uphold a tradition which is not possible to follow.

Passage 4
We shall have to free religion of the sin of untouchability which is imputed to it. Unless we do this, diseases like plague, cholera, etc. cannot be rooted out. There is nothing lowly in the occupations of the untouchables. Doctors as well as our mothers perform similar duties. It may be argued that they cleanse themselves afterwards. Yes, but if untouchables do not do so, the fault is wholly ours and not theirs. It is clear that the moment we begin lovingly to hug them, they will begin to learn to be clean.

Unlike the movement for inter-dining, this movement does not need to be pushed. This movement will not cause the system of Varnashram to disappear. It aims at saying it by doing away with its excesses. It is also not the desire of the initiators of this movement that untouchables should give up their vocations. They only want to demonstrate that the function of removing garbage and filth is a necessary and sacred function and its performance can impart grace even to a Vaishnava. Those who pursue this vocation are not, therefore, degraded but entitled to an equal measure of social privileges with those pursing other callings; their work protects the country from a number of diseases. They, therefore, deserve the same respect as doctors.

Word-meanings and Hindi Translation

That the …………………………… their vocations. (Page 23)

The varna …………………………… the Sudras. (Page 23)

Why does …………………………… in delirium. (Page 23)

take (टेक्) = मानना। in that event = if something happens,

In my humble …………………………… things right. (Page 23)
to put things right = ठीक करने के लिए।
