High Maharajah Theme Of The Lesson
The theme of this story is praiseworthy. We must have compassion towards the birds flying in the sky. Most of the people like to fly kites and they use sharp string. They do not take care of the birds flying in the sky. Their sharp string may cut the skin of birds and it may cause their death. Countless birds lose their life during the kite season. This act is against humanity. As human beings, we must have love and compassion for the birds. Although we should fly kites, but our kite flying may not disturb the flight of birds. The three children in the story take care of the birds when they fly kite. They also love and give respect to the great eagle. It shows that they love him very much. So, the author has tried to express love and compassion for the birds with the help of this story.
High Maharajah Short Summary
Kite season: After the summer season, the sky turned into blue and the air became gentle. It allowed the three children to fly kites. They flew their kites in the paddock.
Different kites: The author and Lai have similar kites. But Rashida’s kite is different because it could sing. It had come from India. His father’s friend had sent it for her. It was a special kite.
The coloured paper for making of kites: It often came from Song Ling who had a shop in the town. His goods were wrapped in the coloured papers. Rashida’s father used to keep it in a box. It was used only for making her kite.
Kite stories: Rashida’s mother often told stories related to kites. According to her, in the legends, the brave young kings used kites as the messenger of love. The general cheered his soldier and the villagers sang every hurt sustained by the soldiers. The kite was the symbol of victory also.
Love for the High Maharajah: The children never disturbed the flight of birds in the sky. They had love and respect for the High Maharajah that was the great eagle. They always wanted to see him whenever they flew kites. It seemed that the great eagle often approved their kite flying. He used to go round the kites and look at the children. They enjoyed the presence of the High Maharajah.
The loss of Rashida’ kite: One day while flying kites, Rashida, unfortunately, cut her hand and lost her kite. When she came back home, her mother scolded her. He was unhappy, but her father told her that he would manage another singing kite for her.
Rashida’s encounter with Mr.
Angus: Rashida was searching for her singing kite. She asked him if he had found her kite. But he answered negatively and looked up. He saw the great eagle. He never liked him and wanted to shoot him with his gun. Rashida replied that nobody could shoot him because he is the king of the sky.
The Australian kites: One day Mr. Angus brought three kites for the children. They were the Australian kite. Father and Mr. Angus made the kite ready for flying. They were big in size, but not the same. They were unable to sing. Rashida did not like them.
The recovery of Rashida’s kite: The High Maharajah spot a place in the bush where her singing kite was caught. The great eagle also guided her to the spot where she found her kite. Although her mother had forbade her from going close to the great eagle. Rashida often regarded him as a good bird. It was never dangerous for her. At last, she thanked the High Maharajah for finding her kite. The author and Lal also thanked him. The High Maharajah was never brute. It was always good for the children.

इस कहानी का मूल उद्देश्य अत्यंत ही मूल्यवान है। हमें आकाश में उड़नेवाले पक्षियों के प्रति दया भाव रखना चाहिए। अधिकांश लोग तेज़ धारदार धागों की सहायता से आकाश में अपना पतंग उड़ाना पसंद करते हैं। वे आकाश में उड़नेवाले उन पक्षियों के प्रति लापरवाह होते हैं। उनके धारदार धागों से उन पक्षियों के पंख और चमड़े कट जाते हैं जिसके कारण कई बार उनकी मौत तक हो जाती है। पतंगों के मौसम में अनेक पक्षियों को अपनी जान गॅवानी पड़ती है। यह कार्य मानवता के विपरीत है। एक मनुष्य होने के नाते हमारे अंदर उन पक्षियों के प्रति दया और करुणा का भाव होना चाहिए। हालांकि हम पतंगें उड़ाते हैं, लेकिन हमें इस बात का भी ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि हमारे उड़ते पतंग पक्षियों की उड़ान को किसी भी तरह से प्रभावित न करे। इस कहानी में तीन बच्चों के बारे में कथा जो जो पतंग उड़ाते समय भी पक्षियों के हित अहित का ख्याल रखते हैं। वे विशालकाय ईगल को भी प्यार करते हैं। और उनका सम्मान करते हैं। यह स्पष्ट करती है कि वे उन्हें बहुत अधिक प्रेम करते हैं। इसलिए, लेखक ने इस कहानी के माध्यम से पक्षियों के साथ प्रेम और दया भाव रखने का बखान किया है।

पतंग की कहानी: जबकि रशीदा की माँ ने उसे पतंग से संबंधित कहानियाँ सुनाई थी। उनके अनुसार, एक पौराणिक कथा में एक युवा राजा थे जो प्रेम का संदेश देने के लिए पतंग का उपयोग करते थे। सेनापती ने अपनी सेना के विजय का उत्सव मनाया और गाँव वालों ने अपनी सेना के जवानों को लगे हर जख्म का गुणगान किया। पतंग उनके विजय का प्रतीक था।
ऊँचे महाराज के लिए प्रेम: बच्चे आकाश में पक्षियों को उड़ने के दौरान कभी भी परेशान नहीं करते थे। उनके मन में ऊँचे महाराज के प्रति प्रेम और सम्मान का भाव रहता था जो एक महान ईगल था। वे जब भी पतंग उड़ाते थे तो उनकी इच्छा होती थी कि वे उन्हें आकाश में देखें।
इन्हें सामान्यत: ऐसा प्रतीत होता था कि ये महान ईगल इनके उड़ते पतंग को अपनी सहमति प्रदान कर रहे हैं। वे पतंग के चारों ओर चक्कर लगाते थे और बच्चों को देखते थे। ये बच्चे उस ऊँचे महाराज की उपस्थिति को देखकर खुश होते थे।
रशीदा के पतंग की हानि: एक दिन जब रशीदा पतंग उड़ा रही थी तो संयोग वश उसने अपना हाथ काट लिया और अपना पतंग खो दिया। जब वह लौटकर घर आई तो उसकी माँ ने उसे डाँटा। वह बहुत उदास थी, लेकिन उसके पिता ने उससे कहा कि उन्होंने उसके लिए एक दूसरे गानेवाले पतंग की व्यवस्था कर ली है।
मि. अंगू के साथ रशीदा का सामना (जवाबी कार्रवाई ): रशीदा अपने गानेवाली पतंग के खोज में थी। उसने उसे (मि. अंगू से) पूछा कि क्या उसे उसे पतंग पता है? लेकिन उसने उसके प्रश्न का उत्तर न में दिया और आकाश की ओर देखने लगा। वह बोला कि वह उसे कभी पसंद नहीं करता है। और उसे अपने बंदूक से गोली मार देना चाहता है। रशीदा ने उसे जवाब देते हुए कहा कि कोई भी उसे नहीं मार सकता क्योंकि वह आकाश का राजा है।

रशीदा के पतंग का वापस मिल जाना : ऊँचे महाराज ने झाड़ियों में एक ऐसा स्थान देखा जहाँ रशीदा का गानेवाला पतंग फँसा था। उस महान ईगल ने रशीदा को उस स्थान तक पहुँचने में मदद किया जहाँ पर उसने अपना पतंग पाया। जबकि उसकी माँ ने उसे उस महान ईगल के समीप जाने से मना किया था। फिर भी रशीदा एक अच्छे पक्षी के रूप में उसका सम्मान करती थी। वह उसके लिए किसी भी तरह से खतरनाक नहीं था। कम-से-कम, उसने उस ऊँचे महाराजा को अपना पतंग वापस दिलाने के लिए धन्यवाद अवश्य दिया। लेखक और लाल ने भी उसे धन्यवाद दिया। वह ऊँचा महाराजा कभी भी खूखार नहीं बना था। वह बच्चों के प्रति हमेशा अच्छा बर्ताव करनेवाला बना रहा।

Passage-1: (Page 57)
Summer was done.
The sky that had been white with heat was blue The days that had been long and heavy were Short and gentle.
All-day now we could have flown kites.
We flew them in the afternoon in the big paddock that had been cleared for the horses.
There was no scrub there to trip us as we ran, no trees to trap or tear the kites.
ग्रीष्म ऋतु समाप्त हो चुका था।
आकाश, जो गरमियों के कारण सफेद लग रहा था, वास्तव में नीला था। दिन जो काफी बड़े और भारी लग रहे थे, छोटे और मनोरम हो चुके थे।
अब हम लोग पूरा-पूरा दिन पतंग उड़ा सकते थे।

Its face was newspaper-brown paper was too heavy-but when it was swaying in the sky it looked grey and beautiful.
But it was the tail that was really beautiful.
It was red and green cloth that Amahad dyed especially to be beautiful.

Rashida’s kite was different.
It sang.
It had come from India.
When Rashida was born, an old friend of her father had sent it to him for her.
It had been bright green, when she had first flown it, but that was a long time ago and it had many coloured faces since then.
But the sticks and the pierced bamboo reed that was the kite’s voice, they were always the same.
रशीदा की पतंग अलग थी। यह गाना गाती थी।
जब रशीदा का जन्म हुआ था तो उसके पिता के एक पुराने मित्र ने इसे उसके उड़ाने के लिए भेजा था।

The coloured paper to make its faces came from Song Ling, a China man who had a store in town.
Sometimes his goods were packed in coloured paper and he always saved it for us.
A long time ago, in China, he had flown kites, too.
Father kept the paper in a box.
It was used only for Rashida’s kite, which we all knew was special; it would sing.

We wound the kite strings round bamboo rollers which father had brought with him from the Punjab.
He had been the best kite flyer in his village.
He used to tell us stories of the kite seasons there and of the Basant Panchami, the spring festival, when all India flew kites and there were competitions to see who flew them best.

Legends about brave rajahs using kites as messengers of love, of a general who cheered his soldiers
by tying a lantern to a kite and telling them it was the star of victory, of villagers who all night long flew singing kites so that they might sing away every harm and hurt.

But these things belonged to India and legend and not to Rashida, not to Lal and not to me.
We flew our kites because we love the dip and dive and sway of them against the sky, the tug of the string on the rollers in our hands.
That was why we took the billy of flour and water paste, the paper for mending, the string and our kites down to the big paddock and chased the horses away from us, down to the far end where the trees were.
लेकिन ये सारी बातें भारत और पौराणिक कथाओं से संबंधित थी, न कि मुझसे, लाल से और रशीदा से संबंधित थी।

“Rashida”, I said, “ There is no string for your kite.”
She looked at the rollers.
“I’II use ordinary string.”
“ Your kite’s too big. Father said, You will have to use the thick string.”
“It will be all right,” said Rashida.
“That wind is not strong today.”
We were tying the string to the kites when Lal mentioned the High Maharajah.
We looked up at the sky, looked in every direction.
मैंने कहा “रशीदा! तुम्हारे पतंग का तो धागा ही नहीं है।”
उसने अपनी चकरी को देखा।
“मैं सामान्य धागों का उपयोग कर सकती हूँ।” पिताजी ने कहा, “तुम्हारी पतंग बहुत बड़ी है, इसके लिए तुम मजबूत धागे का उपयोग करो।”
“क्या यह सही रहेगा” रशीदा ने कहा।
आज हवा उतनी शक्तिशाली नहीं है।”
जब उस ऊँचे महाराजा का संकेत करते हुए लाल ने कहा कि हम अपनी पतंगों के लिए इस धागे का उपयोग करके देखेंगे।
हमलोगों ने आकाश की ओर देखा, प्रत्येक दिशा में देखा।
Passage-9: (Page 58)
“He is not here,” said Rashida.
“He always comes when we fly our kites,” I said.
“We cannot fly them unless we ask him,” said Lal, looking as though he would cry.
“He is the king of the sky.”
“We can’t ask him,” said Rashida, “if he’s not here”.
We stared at the third hill.
It was from there that he always came.
“Perhaps he can see us,” I said, “even if we cannot see him.”
“But we have to ask,” said Lal.
“We always ask him first.”
“वह यहाँ नहीं है” रशीदा बोली। मैंने कहा,
“जब भी हम पतंग उड़ाते हैं, वह यहां अवश्य ही आता है।”
“हम तब तक उसे नहीं उड़ा सकते जब तक कि उससे नहीं कह लेते” लाल ने कहा, हालांकि जिस तरह से वह चिल्लाता है, ऐसा लगता है कि हमें देख रहा है।

“I suppose we could salaam,” said Rashida, “That should satisfy him.”
But it was Lal she was thinking about, not the High Maharajah.
We bowed very low towards the third hill.
We put Lal’s kite up first, he was little and always needed help.
Then, Rashida and I put mine up, sometimes I needed help,too.
Then, Rashida put her own up; she was bigger than we were and she never needed help.
Then, Rashida began grabbing at the kites.
“कल्पना करो, हम उसे सलाम करेंगे,” रशीदा बोली। “वह उसे संतुष्टि प्रदान करेगा।”

The kites flew high, riding the wind.
The newspaper kites danced and Rashida’s bright orange kite sang for them, sang for us, sang for the whole world.
The string spun on the rollers, playing out and out, while the kites danced higher.
They were pulling at our hands and arms and we were running with them.
It was as though we were flying and dancing too.
हवा पर सवार होकर हमारी पतंगें ऊपर चली गई।
अखबार से बनी पतंगें हवा में नाचने लगी और राशीदा की नारंगी रंग की पतंग उसके लिए, हमारे लिए, पूरे संसार के लिए गाना गाने लगी।
चकरी से धागा कट गया और पतंग उससे दूर हो गया और दूर से भी अधिक दूर होता चला गया जब वह ऊँचाई पर नाच रहा था।
वह हाथ से निकल चुका था और हम अपनी भुजाओं को घुमा रहे थे।
यद्यपि हमलोग अपने पतंग को उस समय भी उड़ा रहे थे और नचा रहे थे।

Suddenly Lal gave a shout, “Look!
The High Maharajah!”
And there he was the-High Maharaja of the Sky, the great eagle that owned the air.
Serenely and without haste he circled the three kites.
His wings hardly moved.
He glided solemnly while they danced for him, and Rashida’s kite sang.
And then, if approving, he soared suddenly high-higher than all the kites in the world.
He circled one more, looking at us and then flew towards the third hill.
अचानक से लाल चिल्लाया, “ऊँचे महाराज को देखो।”
और आकाश का वह ऊँचा महाराज महान ईगल था जिसने हवा में अपना आधिपत्य जमा रखा था।
शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से और जल्दी ही उसने हमारी तीनों पतंगों का चक्कर लगा लिया।

“He is too big”, I said, “I am glad he doesn’t come close to us.”
“He is the High Maharajah”, said Lal “He would never hurt us.”

“I want to fly”, said Rashida,
and she jumped up and down with her kites as though she were flying already.
“If I could fly I would go so far, so far up, that no kite could catch me.
I’d be so high that you, Nimmi, and you, Lal would look like ants—would look smaller than ants.
I would fly up so high that I could see all the world, everything, the whole world spread out like a carpet.”
“She flung out her arms, to show us how wide the world was.’
The roller fell from her hand her kite began to leap away.
“मैं भी उड़ना चाहती हूँ” रशीदा बोली।
और वह अपने पतंग के साथ नीचे-ऊपर उछलने लगी क्योंकि ऐसा लग रहा था कि वह भी उड़ रही थी।
“यदि मैं भी उड़ सकता तो मैं बहुत दूर निकल जाता, इतना अधिक ऊँचा, कि कोई भी पतंग हमें पकड़ नहीं पाता।
मैं इतनी ऊँचाई पर पहुँच जाती कि निम्मी और तुम, लाल सभी देखने में चींटी के समान दिखते।
में इतनी ऊँचाई पर जाकर उड़ती कि वहाँ से मैं सारे संसार को. सभी कुछ को, कुछ इस तरह से देख सकती मानो यह एक खुला कालीन बिछा हो।”
“वह हमें यह दिखाने के लिए कि यह संसार कितना विशाल है, अपनी ही बाँहों से बाहर उड़ने लगी।”
चरखी उसके हाथ से नीचे गिर पड़ा और पतंग उसके उछाल से बाहर हो गया।
Passage-15: (Page 59)
I screamed and Lal shouted and Rashida grabbed desperately to catch the string.
It was cutting her hand, but she held on to it.
With my free hand, I tried to pick up her roller.
I had just got it when Rashida jerked the string-to make it hurt less- and it snapped.
It snapped high up, farther than Rashida could jump, farther than we could reach.
We could only standLal and I with our newspaper kites and Rashida with her useless string and watch the singing kite fly upwards and away from us like a bird that had been set free.
मैं भय से चिल्लाया और लाल भी चीख उठा और रशीदा आशाहीन भाव से झपटकर अचानक से धागे को पकड़ने की कोशिश करने लगी।
इस क्रम में उसके हाथ कट गए लेकिन वह अपने प्रयास में लगी रही।
अपने खाली हाथों से मैं उसकी चरखी को पकड़ने का प्रयास करने लगा।
रशीदा ने अपने जख्म को कम करने के लिए अपना चरखी
उछाला और मैंने उसे लपक कर पकड़ लिया। इसे ऊपर ही पकड़ लिया, ताकि इसके आगे भी रशीदा उछल
सके, इसके बाद हम सभी वहाँ तक अपनी पहुँच बना सके।
हम महज खड़े रह सके लाल और मैं अपने अखबार से बने पतंग के साथ और रशीदा अपने हाथ में बेकार हो चुके धागे और चरखी को लेकर खड़े थे और ऊपर उड़ते गाने वाले अपने पतंग को हम अपने से एक पक्षी की तरह दूर जाते देख रहे थे जो कि पक्षियों की तरह आजाद हो चुका था।
Passage-16: (Page 59)
At home, Ama scolded Rashida and called her impatient.
She sat disconsolate.
“No tears”, said Father, “I will write to India.
We will get another singing kite.”
“It will not be the same” said Rashida,
“It will not be mine for being born.”
We were out searching for it when we saw Mr. Angus.
He was our neighbour, a big man with a voice so loud it frightened you,
but with so many smiles that it didn’t matter.
“Oh, Mr. Angus!” said Rashida,
“Have you seen an orange kite?”
घर पहुँचने पर अमा रशीदा पर चिल्लाई और उसे अधीर बोली।
वह अत्यंत ही दुखी थी। उसके पिता बोले “आँसू बहाने की जरूरत नहीं है।
मैं अभी भारत पत्र लिखता हूँ। हम दूसरा गाने वाला पतंग मँगवाएँगे।”
“यह आवश्यक नहीं कि उसी के जैसी होगा,” रशीदा बोली।
“यह मेरे जन्म के समय वाले जैसा नहीं हो सकता है।”
जब हमने मि. अंगुस को नहीं देख लिया तब तक उसे खोजते रहे।
वह हमारा पड़ोसी था जो एक बहुत ही लंबा और भारी आवाज वाला आदमी था जिससे हमलोग भयभीत रहते थे।
लेकिन इतने मुस्कान के साथ होते थे कि यह हमारे लिए मायना ही नहीं रखता था।
“ओह! मि. अंगू” रशीदा बोली।
“क्या आपने एक नारंगी रंग का पतंग देखा है?
Passage-17: (Page 59)
“No kites today” he said. “Not even orange ones.”
Suddenly he looked up at the sky.
“There is that eagle hawk again.
Savage -looking brute.”.
“It’s the High Maharajah,” I said, “He wouldn’t harm a fly.”
“Not thinking of flies,” said Mr. Angus.
“Thinking of you father’s lambs.
I’ll shoot him if he comes near my place.”
“You couldn’t shoot him!”
We were shocked.
वह बोला, “कोई पतंग नहीं।” “यहाँ तक कि एक भी नारंगी नहीं।”
अचानक ही उसने ऊपर की ओर देखा।
“वहाँ एक ईगल था जो फिर से शिकार की तलाश में था।
देखने में एक भयानक और बर्बर पक्षी।”
मैं बोला, “यह तो ऊँचा महाराज है।”
“वह जब भी उड़ता है तो कोई हानि नहीं पहुँचाता।”
“उड़ने के बारे में सोचना भी नहीं,” मि. अंगू बोले।
“अपने पिता को निर्दयता के बारे में सोचो।
यदि वह मेरे स्थान पर आए तो निश्चय ही मैं उसे गोली मार दूंगा।”
हम भौंचक्के से बोल पड़े,
“आप उसे नहीं मार सकते।”
Passage-18: (Page 59)
“You are right,” he said,
“I couldn’t shoot him.
Too quick, too mean, too cunning.”
I looked at his gun.
“But if you see him again……………. “I’II raise my hat to him.”
The next day Mr. Angus came to our place.
He had brought some things from town that father wanted on the farm.
“That kite,” he said, “did you find it?”
“No,” said Rashida, “We will never find it.”
“तुम सही कह रहे हो” वह बोला,
“मैं उसे नहीं मार सकता।
अत्यंत तेज, अत्यंत खुदगर्ज, अत्यंत मक्कार।”
मैंने उसकी बंदूक की ओर देखा।
“लेकिन यदि तुम उसे दुबारा देखते हो…………..” “मैं उसके लिए अपना टोपी उठा दूंगा।”
अगले दिन मि. अंगुस हमारे स्थान पर आए।
उन्होंने शहर से कुछ सामान लाया था जो पिताजी ने खेती
के लिए मँगाया था। “वह पतंग”, “क्या तुमने उसे पा लिया?” वे बोले।
“नहीं, अब हम उसे कभी नहीं पाएँगे” रशीदा बोली।
Passage-19: (Page 60)
“Then you’d better look at these.”
He handed her a long thin parcel.
“I will take them back, If you don’t like them!”
“Kites!” said Rashida, “Australian kites!”
There were three of them-one pink, one green, one orange.
Father and Mr. Angus put the sticks together and fitted the faces over them.
They were big kites as tall as Lal and the orange one was for Rashida.
“तो फिर तुम इस पर बेहतर ध्यान दो।”
उन्होंने उसके हाथ में एक लंबा और पतला सा पार्सल रख दिया।
यदि तुम इसे पसंद नहीं करते हो तो मैं इसे बाद में वापस ले लूंगा।”
पतंगें? आस्ट्रेलियन पतंगें?” रशीदा बोली।
उनमें तीन पतंगें एक गुलाबी, एक हरा और एक नारंगी रंग के थे।
पिताजी और मि. अंगुस दोनों ही साथ-साथ पतंग की तीलियों को व्यवस्थित करने के लिए चेहरा सामने ले आए।
वे सभी उतने ही बड़े पतंग थे जितना बड़ा कि लाल का था और रशीदा का गुलाबी।

But when we were running down to the paddock to fly them, Rashida said, “It is not the same.
There is no kite in Australia that can sing.”
“What is the Maharajah doing?” said Lal.
“He was there, at the foot of the third hill, flying low over the bush and scrub.
Sometimes he swooped down out of sight.
We watched and show him do it many times
He would hover over the one place, circling and dipping then, he would fall towards the ground.
He was like a kite that would not stay up.
और जब हम उसे उड़ाने के लिए घुड़साल की छत से नीचे दौड़े तो रशीदा बोली, “यह उसके जैसा नहीं है।
“यहाँ आस्ट्रेलिया में कोई भी ऐसा पतंग नहीं है जो गा सके।”
“महाराजा क्या कर रहा है?” लाल बोला।
“वह वहीं है, तीसरी चोटी के तलहटी में झाड़ियों और झुरमुटों के ऊपरे धीमी गति में उड़ रहा है।”
कभी-कभी तो वह तेजी से हवा में तैरते हुए सीधे नीचे की ओर जाते हुए हमारी नजरों से ओझल हो जाता है।
हम उसे देखते रहते और वह इस करतब को कई बार दुहराता रहता।
वह किसी खास स्थान के चारों ओर गोलाकार में चक्कर लगाता, चक्कर लगाते हुए अचानक तेजी से नीचे आ जाता, ऐसा लगता कि वह जमीन पर गिर रहा है।
वह एक पतंग के जैसा प्रतीत होता था जो हवा में कहीं भी नहीं थमता।
Passage-21: (Page 60)
“There must be something wrong with him,” said Rashida.
“He must be hurt. Lal, you mind the kites.
Nimmi and I are going to see what’s the matter with him.”
“I am not going,” I said. “He’s too big.
We should go and get Father:”
“We won’t go close,” said Rashida.
“Just close enough to see of he is hurt.”
I followed her then, as I always did.
वहाँ उसके साथ निश्चय ही कुछ गलत हो रहा है”, रशीदा बोली।
“लाल, निश्चय ही उसे चोट पहुँचा है, तुम पतंग को सँभालो।
मैं और निम्मी वहाँ जी कर देखते हैं कि उसके साथ क्या बात है।”
मैंने कहा, “मैं वहाँ नहीं जा रहा हूँ।” “वह बहुत बड़ा है।
हम लोग वहाँ जाएँगे और पिताजी को वहीं पाएँगे।” रशीदा बोली,
“हम उसके उतने भी करीब नहीं जाएंगे।”
“बस नजदीक से देखना है कि उसे किसी प्रकार का आघात तो नहीं पहुंचा है।”
उसके बाद मैंने भी उसका पीछा किया, जैसा कि मैं हमेशा करता था।
Passage-22: (Page 60)
The Maharajah had not risen for a long time, but we walked towards the scrub around which he had hovered.
The track was overgrown.
It was rocky and the trees grew low to the ground.
“We should go back now.
He must have flown away.”
“Just a little bit further.”
Rashida kept saying that.
At last she leant against a big rock.
“We will go back now,” she said, “He is nowhere here.”
महाराजा काफी देर तक ऊपर नहीं आया, लेकिन हम सभी उस झाड़ी की ओर बढ़ते जा रहे थे जिसके चारों ओर गोलाकार में ईगल चक्कर लगा रहा था।
उसके घूमने का पथ काफी बड़ा था।
यह पथरीली जमीन थी और जमीन पर छोटे-छोटे पेड़ उगे थे।
“अब हमलोग वापस लौटे। निश्चय ही वह कहीं और उड़ गया होगा।”
“इसके आगे थोड़ी ही दूरी पर।” रशीदा ने यह कहना जारी रखा।
अंत में वह एक बड़े से पत्थर पर अपना पीठ सटाकर लेट गई।
“अब हम लोग वापस जाएँगे,” वह बोली।
“वह यहाँ कहीं भी नहीं है।”
Passage-23: (Page 60)
Suddenly, there was a noise from the other side of the rock.
There was a movement of branches and a sound like rushing wind.
We looked up and saw red eyes, hooked bulk and huge red-brown feathered body.
The wings were beating over our head and the great bird was very close.
अचानक ही पत्थर के दूसरी तरफ से आवाज आती सुनाई दी।
अचानक से पेड़ों की टहनियों में तीव्र हलचल हुई और उससे उठने वाली आवाज से लगा मानो तेज हवा के साथ आंधी चल रही हो।
हमने नजर दौड़ाई तो लाल आँखें, किसी बड़ी वस्तु के वक्राकार अंश को देखा जो काफी बड़ा था और उसका शरीर फर से ढका था।
हमारे सर के ऊपर पंख हिल रहे थे और वह विशाल पक्षी हमारे सिर पर मँडरा रहे थे।
Passage-24: (Pages 60 & 61)
We clung to each other, hiding our eyes, terrified.
But we could not hide our ears.
The beating of those mighty wings became the beating of our own hearts.
When Rashida realized that she raised her head and made me raise mine.
High, high in the blue was the Maharajah, a speck, a tiny thing moving towards his hill.
Rashida went round to the other side of the rock and then called me to her, “Look!”
हमने एक-दूसरे को देखा और भयभीत होकर अपनी आँखों को ढक लिया।
लेकिन हमने अपना कान बंद नहीं किया।
उसके शक्तिशाली पंख फड़फड़ा रहे थे वह हमारे धड़कते दिल की धड़कन बन चुकी थी।
जब रशीदा ने अनुभव किया तो उसने अपना सिर ऊपर उठाया और मुझे भी अपना सर उठाने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
ऊँचा, ऊँचे आकाश में उड़ रहा वह महाराजा था,, बहुत छोटे से स्थान पर, उसके पहाड़ की ओर एक छोटी सी कोई वस्तु हिल रही थी।
रशीदा चट्टान के दूसरी ओर घूमती हुई गई और फिर उसने मुझे अपने पास बुलाया, “देखो!”
Passage-25: (Page 61)
It was a singing kite.
Its tail was caught in a bush.
It was moving in the wind, bumping up and down.
The sticks were broken.
The orange face was slashed to pieces but the bamboo reed-the voice, the singer, the kite’s own self- was safe.
Ama scolded us at home.
“You are not to go near any of these wild creatures.”
यह तो चमकता हुआ पतंग था।
इसकी पूँछ झाड़ी में घुस गई थी।
यह हवा में चक्कर खा रही थी, ऊपर-नीचे कर रही थी।
उसकी तीलियाँ टूट चुकी थी।
उसके नारंगी भाग फट कर चिथड़े हो चुके थे, लेकिन पतंग का वह अपना विशिष्ट भाग जो बाँसुरीनुमा था, जिससे आवाज निकलती थी, जो गाता था, अभी भी सुरक्षित था।
अम्मा घर में हम पर चिल्लाई।
“कभी भी ऐसे किसी भी जंगली निरीह जन्तुओं के पास नहीं जाना है।
Passage-26: (Page 61)
But Father smiled. “Rashida is happy,” he said.
“We can make her Australian kite sing.”
Ama was holding the kite, looking at its torn paper.
“This is what he could have done to you.
He must have thought it was a living thing.”
“But he didn’t hurt us,” said Rashida.
“And he showed me where the kite was.”
लेकिन पिताजी मुस्कराए। वे बोले, “रशीदा खुश है।”
हम उसे गाने वाला आस्ट्रेलियाई पतंग बना देंगे।”
अम्मा ने पतंग को पकड़ रखा था। उसके फटे हुए कागज को देख रही थी।
“यह क्या है जिसे उसने तुम्हारे लिए कर रखा है।
निश्चय ही उसने सोचा होगा कि यह कोई जीवित प्राणी है।”
“लेकिन उसने हमें किसी भी प्रकार से चोट नहीं पहुँचाया,” रशीदा बोली।
“और उसने हमें वह स्थान दिखाया जहाँ मेरा पतंग था।”
Passage-27: (Page 61)
“He is good Maharajah,” said Lal.
Ama looked at him and then at all of us.
“You will not go near him again,” she said.
Outside, in the yard, Rashida said, “The High Maharajah of the Sky Has given me my song, and I will thank him.”
She salaamed very solemnly towards the third hill and, after a moment when I almost laughed, so did Lal.
And so did I.
“वह बहुत अच्छा महाराज है”, लाल बोला।
अम्मा ने उसे देखा और फिर हम सभी को देखा।
फिर वह बोली, “तुम लोग उसके करीब कभी नहीं जाओगे।”
बाहर, आहाते में भी. रशीदा बोली। उस ऊँचे महाराज ने मुझे मेरा गीत लौटाया, और मैं उन्हें धन्यवाद देती हूँ।”
उसने बड़ी गंभीरता के साथ तीसरी चोटी को सलाम किया, कुछ क्षणों के बाद जब हमलोग एक तरह से हँस रहे थे, वैसा ही लाल ने किया।
और मैंने भी वैसा ही किया।
