The Purple Jar Theme Of The Lesson
In the story, The Purple Jar’a little girl about seven years old, Rosamond, once walks with her mother in the street of London. She is overjoyed to see different sorts of things in shops and tells her mother to buy them, though they were of no use for her. Her mother denies to buy anything by saying that they were useless for her. At last she sees a purple jar in a chemist’s shop and yearns for it. Her mother does not buy it as Rosamond’s shoes are quite worn out. One of them has a great hole through which stones come into her shoe which hurts her foot very much. Rosamond tells her mother to buy a pair of shoes also. But her mother tells her to have either of two as she has not enough money to buy both a purple jar and shoes.
Finally, Rosamond decides to have the purple jar. Though her mother makes her understand that a pair of shoes is more necessary than the purple jar, she insists to have the latter. Her mother yields to her craved excitement and buys the purple jar. Rosamond finds something black in the jar which smells very disagreeable. She empties the jar and to her dismay she finds that the jar is a plain white glass. She feels disappointed and regrets her imprudent choice. Thus the story tells us that we should make our choice wisely otherwise we have to regret our choice and we should accept the advice of our elders.
The Purple Jar Short Summary
Rosamond is excited to see things: Rosamond walks with her mother in the streets of London. She is very happy to see a great variety of things in shops. She desires to have all these things. But her mother refused to buy anything as they are of no use to her.
Rosamond insists for a purple jar: While walking they come to a chemist’s shop. Rosamond is mesmerised by the beauty of jars of blue, green, red, yellow and purple colours. She longs to have a purple jar. Her mother denies to buy it by saying that this is of no use to her.
A stone gets into Rosamond’s shoe: Rosamond’s shoes are quite worn out. One of them has a big hole through which stones get into her shoe and hurt her foot. While walking in the street a stone gets into her shoe and gives her so much pain that she is obliged to hop every other step.
They visit a shoemaker’s shop to buy shoes: Rosamond’s mother takes her to a shoemaker’s shop to buy a new pair of shoes for Rosamond. Rosamond does not like the shop as it stinks disagreeably and she still thinks about the jar. Her mother understands her strong desire to have the jar. She does not buy shoes for her.
The mother agrees to buy the purple jar: Rosamond’s mother at last agrees to buy the purple jar. Rosamond feels very happy. At home she collects all her flowers to put them into the purple flower pot. Finally Rosamond’s servant brings the jar for her.
The jar disappoints her: Rosamond finds something black in the jar which smells very disagreeably. When she empties the purple jar, she finds that it is no longer a purple vase, instead it is a plain white jar. She feels depressed and dejected. She regrets her imprudent choice and determines to be wiser in future.
Rosamond’s father refuses to take her with him: Rosamond’s father and her brother are going to a glass house. They tell her to be ready to go there with them. She is quite ready to go. But when she walks downstairs, her shoe dropped off. She puts it again but walks by dragging her shoe. When her father sees it, he refuses to take her with him.

Rosamond, a little girl about seven years, was walking with her mother in the streets of London.
As she passed along, she looked in at the windows of several shops and she saw a great variety of different sorts of things, of which she did not know the use, or even the names.
She wished to stop to look at them; but there was a great number of people in the streets, and a great many carts and carriages and wheelbarrows, and she was afraid to let go her mother’s hand.
रोजमोंड, जो सात साल की एक छोटी सी लड़की थी, लंदन की गलियों में अपनी माँ के साथ घूम रही थी।
चलते चलते, उसने कई दुकानों की खिड़कियों में देखा। और उसने कई तरह की विभिन्न प्रकार की चीजें देखीं, जिनके बारे में उसे पता नहीं था या यहाँ तक कि उनका नाम भी नहीं जानती थी।

“Oh mother, how happy I should be,” said she, as she passed a toy-shop, “if I had all these pretty things!”
“What, all! Do you wish for them all, Rosamond?”
“Yes, mamma, all.”
As she spoke, they came to a milliner’s shop where the windows were hung with ribbons, and lace, and festoons of artificial flowers.

It was a jeweller’s shop; and there were a great many pretty baubles, ranged in drawers behind glass.

I have a pair of buckles.
I don’t want another pair,’ said her mother and walked on. Rosamond was very sorry that her mother wanted nothing.
Presently, however, they came to a shop, which appeared to her far more beautiful than the rest.
It was a chemist’s shop; but she did not know that.

“You might put flowers in them, mamma and they would look so pretty on the chimney-piece.
I wish I had one of them.”
“You have a flower-pot,” said her mother; “and that is not a flowerpot.”
“But I could use it for a flower-pot, mamma, you know.”

Rosamond kept her head turned to look at the purple vase till she could see it no longer.
“Then, mother,” said she, after a pause, “perhaps you have no money.”
“Yes, I have.”
“Dear! if I had money, I would buy roses, and boxes, and purple flower-pots, and everything.”
Rosamond was obliged to pause in the midst of her speech.

I wish you’d be so very good as to give me another pair.”
“Nay, Rosamond, but I have not money enough to buy shoes, and flower-pots, and boxes, and everything.”

Rosamond thought that was a great pity.
But now her foot, which had been hurt by the stone, began to give her so much pain that she was obliged to hop every other step, and she could think of nothing else.
They came to a shoemaker’s shop soon afterwards.
“There! there! mamma, there are shoes there are little shoes that would just fit me;
and you know shoes would really be of use to me.”
रोजमोंड ने सोचा था कि यह बहुत दयनीय था।

She followed her mother into the shop.
Mr. Sole, the shoemaker, had a great many customers, and his shop was full, so they were obliged to wait.
“Well, Rosamond,” said her mother, “you don’t think this shop so pretty as the rest?”
“No, not nearly; it’s black and dark,
and there are nothing but shoes all round; and besides, there’s a very disagreeable smell.”
“That smell is the smell of new leather.”
“हाँ, वो तो हैं, रोजमोंड। अंदर आओ।”

“Why, I don’t know about the shoes, certainly, till I’ve tried;
but, mamma, I’m quite sure I should like the flower-pot.”

You can’t think how these hurt me.
I believe I’d better have the new shoes, but yet, that purple flower-pot-Oh, indeed, mamma, these shoes are not so very, very bad;
I think I might wear them a little longer, and the month will soon be over.
I can make them last to the end of the month, can’t I? Don’t you think so, mamma?”

“Nay, my dear, I want you to think for yourself: you will have time enough to consider about it whilst I speak to Mr. Sole about my clogs.”
Mr. Sole was by this time at leisure;
and whilst her mother was speaking to him, Rosamond stood in profound meditation,
with one shoe on, and the other in her hand.
“Well, my dear, have you decided?”

“Why, as to that, I can’t promise you, Rosamond;
but when you are to judge for yourself, you should choose what will make you the happiest;
and then it would not signify who thought you silly.”
“Then, mamma, if that’s all, I’m sure the flower-pot would make me the happiest,” said she,
putting on her old shoe again; “so I choose the flower-pot.”
“Very well, you shall have it: clasp your shoe and come home.”
“माँ-हाँ, मैं विश्वास करती हूँ-मुझे फूलदान ही चाहिए; यही है, अगर आप मुझे बहुत मूर्ख नहीं समझेंगी, माँ”

Rosamond clasped her shoe and ran after her mother: it was not long before the shoe came down at the heel
and many times was she obliged to stop to take the stones out of her shoe and often was she obliged to limp with pain;
but still the thoughts of the purple flowerpot prevailed, and she persisted in her choice.
रोजमोंड ने अपने जूते पहन लिए और अपनी माँ के पश्चात भाग पड़ी:

When they came to the shop with the large window, Rosamond felt her joy redouble,
upon hearing her mother desire the servant, who was with them, to buy the purple jar, and bring it home.
He had other commissions, so he did not return with them.
Rosamond, as soon as she got in, ran to gather all her own flowers,
which she had in a corner of her mother’s garden.
जब वे बड़ी खिड़कीवाली दुकान पर आए, रोजमोंड की खुशी तब दुगनी हो गई,

“I’m afraid they’ll be dead before the flowerpot comes, Rosamond,” said her mother to her,
when she was coming in with the flowers in her lap.
“No, indeed, mamma, it will come home very soon, I dare say, and shan’t I be very happy putting them into the purple flower-pot?”
“I hope so, my dear.”

The servant was much longer returning home than Rosamond had expected;
but at length he came, and brought with him the long-wished-for jar.
The moment it was set down upon the table, Rosamond ran up to it with an exclamation of joy.
“I may have it now, mamma?”
“Yes, my dear, it is yours.”
नौकर रोजमोंड की अपेक्षा से देरी से घर लौट रहा था;
लेकिन लम्बे समय बाद वह आया, और अपने साथ वह जार भी लाया जिसकी वह प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी। जिसे उसने मेज पर रखा, रोजमोंड उसकी ओर खुशी से दौड़ी आई।

Rosamond poured the flowers from her lap upon the carpet and seized the purple flowerpot.
“Oh, dear mother!” cried she, as soon as she had taken off the top,
“but there’s something dark in it-it smells very disagreeably what is it?
I didn’t want this black stuff.”
“Nor I my dear.”
“But what shall I do with it, mamma?”
रोजमोंड ने फूलों को अपनी गोद से कालीन पर रख दिया और बैंगनी फूलदान उठा लिया।

“That was more than I promised you, my dear; but I will lend you a bowl.”

The bowl was produced and Rosamond proceeded to empty the purple vase.
But what was her surprise and disappointment, when it was entirely empty, to find that it was no longer a purple vase.
It was a plain white glass jar, which had appeared to have that beautiful colour merely from the liquor with which it had been filled.
कटोरा लाया गया और रोजमोंड बैंगनी फूलदान खाली करने लगी।
लेकिन उसे आश्चर्य और निराशा तब हुई, जब पूरी तरह खाली होने पर पता लगा कि यह अब बैंगनी फूलदान नहीं था।

Little Rosamond burst into tears.
“Why should you cry, my dear?” said her mother; “it will be of as much use to you now as ever for a flower-pot.”
“But it won’t look so pretty on the chimneypiece.
I am sure, if I had known that it was not really purple,
I should not have wished to have it so much.”
“But didn’t I tell you that you had not examined it and that perhaps you would be disappointed?”
छोटी रोजमोंड की आँखों में आँसू आ गए।
उसकी माँ ने कहा, “तुम क्यों रो रही हो मेरी प्रिय?” “यह फूलदान के लिए ही इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा।”

“And so I am disappointed indeed.
I wish I had believed you beforehand.
Now I had much rather have the shoes, for I shall not be able to walk all this month: even walking home that little way hurt me exceedingly.
Mamma, I’ll give you the flower-pot back again and that purple stuff and all, if you’ll only give me the shoes.”

and now the best thing you can possibly do is to bear your disappointment with good humour.”
“I will bear it as well as I can,” said Rosamond, wiping her eyes and she began slowly and sorrowfully to fill the vase with flowers.
नहीं, रोजमोंड, आपको अपनी पसंद का पालन करना चाहिए;

But Rosamond’s disappointment did not end here: many were the difficulties and distresses into which her imprudent choice brought her before the end of the month.
Every day her shoes grew worse and worse, till at last she could neither run, dance, jump, nor walk in them.
Whenever Rosamond was called to see anything, she was pulling her shoes up at the heels and was sure to be too late.
लेकिन रोजमोंड की निराशा यहाँ खत्म नहीं हुई। उनकी अविवेकपूर्ण पसंद महीने के अंत से पहले कई कठिनाइयाँ और परेशानियाँ लाई।

Whenever her mother was going out to walk, she could not take Rosamond with her,
for Rosamond had no soles to her shoes; and at length, on the very last day of the month,
it happened that her father proposed to take her with her brother to a glass-house which she had long wished to see.
She was very happy; but, when she was quite ready, had her hat and gloves on,
and was making haste downstairs to her brother and father, who were waiting for her at the hall door, the shoe dropped off;
she put it on again in a great hurry; but, as she was going across the hall, her father turned round.
जब भी उसकी माँ चलने के लिए बाहर निकलती, वह रोजमोंड को साथ नहीं ले जा पाती,

No one must walk slipshod with me. Why, Rosamond,” said he, looking at her shoes with disgust, “I thought that you were always neat; go, I can not take you with me.”
Rosamond coloured and retired. “Oh, mamma,” said she, as she took off her hat, “how I wish that I had chosen the shoes! they would have been of so much more useful to me than that jar:
however, I am sure-no, not quite sure but I hope I shall be wiser another time.”
“तुम टेढ़ी-मेढ़ी क्यों चल रही हो?
कोई भी मेरे साथ टेढ़ा-मेढ़ा नहीं चलना चाहिए, क्यों, राजमोंड.” उसने उसके जूते को घृणा से देखकर कहा, “मैंने सोचा कि तुम हमेशा साफ रहती हो; जाओ, मैं तुम्हें अपने साथ नहीं ले जा सकता।”
