An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog Theme Of The Poem
This poem is an extract from Oliver Goldsmith’s novel The Vicar of Wakefield’. The poem mourns the death of a mad dog and is called an ‘elegy’ in a satirical way. An elegy is a poem which expresses sad feelings over the death of a friend or acquaintance. The man described in the poem was bitten by a mad dog living in the same town. The man was considered to be a kind-hearted and religious man. He was thought to be a good Christian. He was ever ready to help the poor and the needy. Everyone swore that the ‘good’ man would die. However, a wonderful thing happened. The man recovered but it was the dog that died. It proves that the man was not as good and noble as he appeared to the world. He had a deceptive appearance. Actually, he was more dangerous and poisonous than the made dog. Many persons keep up false appearances but are more dangerous and poisonous than mad dogs.

A wonderful short story: The poet urges people of all kinds to listen to his song or story carefully. They must lend their ears to what he says. Perhaps they will find his song quite short. Such a short poem or song will not hold them for long. It will be surprisingly quite short.
A kind and religious man: In the town of Islington there lived a man. The people around him had a very good opinion of him. He was a religious-minded person. He went to Church regularly to pray like a good Christian. His life was based on high morals and principles.
Generous and helpful: He was a kind-hearted man of gentle nature. He always tried to help and comfort not only his friends but also his enemies. He was really a generous man. Before putting clothes on his body he used to distribute clothes to the poor and the naked people.
Dogs found in Islington: The town of Islington had many dogs. There were dogs of all breeds and kinds in the town. There were mongrels, puppies, whelps, hounds etc. Besides them, there were many other dogs of low breed and quality.
The dog and man at first friends: There was a particular dog. The dog and the man at first were friends. But then their relations became bitter. The dog, to serve his private or selfish ends, went mad and bit the man.
People ran wondering: People from the neighbouring streets came running to help the man. They were highly surprised. They wondered why the dog had bitten such a good man. They swore that why the dog had gone mad. Only a mad dog could have bitten such a good man.
Everyone feared that the man would die: The wound where the dog had bitten had sored. It caused pain and inflammation. It was really a sad sight to every good Christian see the wounded man. The people swore that the dog was mad. They were also sure that the man would die.
Most unexpected thing happened: Very soon a wonderful thing came to light. It showed that the people who blamed the dog were unprincipled and immoral persons. So was the man who appeared to be good and noble. The man recovered and became well again. He survived but it was the dog that died in the end. It proved that the man was more poisonous and dangerous than even the mad dog.

Ishington के कुत्ते : Islington में बहुत से कुत्ते थे। कस्बे में हर नस्ल के और हर प्रकार के कुत्ते थे। मोगरल, पप्पी, व्हल्प और शिकारी कुत्ते वहाँ मौजूद थे। उनके अतिरिक्त निम्न नस्लों और श्रेणियों के अनेक कुत्ते वहाँ मौजूद थे।
पहले-पहल कुत्ता और आदमी दोस्त हो गए : कस्बे में एक विशेष प्रकार का कुत्ता था। पहले-पहल कुत्ता और आदमी दोस्त बन गये, लेकिन फिर उनके संबंध कटु हो गये थे। कुत्ता अपने निजी स्वार्थ को पूरा करने हेतु पागल हो गया और उसने उसे आदमी को काट लिया।
हैरान लोग दौड़ते हुए आये: आस-पास (पड़ोस) की गलियों से लोग उस आदमी की सहायता हेतु दौड़ते हुए आये। वे बहुत हैरान थे। वे हैरान थे कि कुत्ते ने उस भले आदमी को क्यों काट लिया। उन्होंने कसम खाकर कहा कि कुत्ता पागल हो गया था। केवल एक पागल कुत्ता ही ऐसे भले आदमी को काट सकता है।
हर एक को डर था कि आदमी मर जाएगा: कुत्ते ने जहाँ काटा था वहाँ जख्म हो गया था। उसमें सूजन और पीड़ा हो रही थी। हर अच्छे इसाई के लिए जख्मी मनुष्य को देखना वास्तव में एक उदास भरा नजारा था। लोगों ने कसम खाकर कहा कि कुत्ता पागल हो गया था। वे आश्वस्त थे कि आदमी मर जाएगा।
बहुत ही अप्रत्याशित घटना घटी : शीघ्र ही एक विचित्र घटना प्रकाश में आइ। उस घटना ने सिद्ध किया कि जो लोग कुत्ते को दोष दे रहे थे वे सिद्धांतहीन एवं अनैतिक व्यक्ति थे। और इसी प्रकार वह आदमी जो भला और अच्छा प्रतीत होता था. सिद्धांतहीन और अनैतिक था। आदमी काटने से उबर गया और फिर से ठीक हो गया। वह जिंदा रहा लेकिन अंत में वह नहीं, कुत्ता मर गया। इससे सिद्ध हो गया कि वह आदमी पागल कुत्ते से भी अधिक जहरीला और खतरनाक था।
