Can you explain each of Brahmagupta’s rules in terms of Bela’s Building of Fun Class 6
Question 1.
Can you explain each of Brahmagupta’s rules in terms of Bela’s Building of Fun, or in terms of a number line? Class 6
Solution:
Rules for addition :
(i) (+2) + (+1) = +3 (Sum of two positive integers is positive)
(ii) (-3) + (-2) = -5 (Sum of two negative integers is negative)
(iii) (+3) + (-5) = (5 - 3) = -2
or (+4) + (-3) = +(4 - 3) = +1.
(To add a positive number and a negative number subtract the smaller number (without sign) from the greater number (without sign) and place the sign of the greater number).
+4 + (-4) = 0; -3 + (+3) = 0, etc.
(Sum of a number and its additive inverse is zero.)
Rules for subtraction :
(i) +5 - (+3) = 2 (If a smaller positive number is subtracted from a greater positive number, then result is a positive number).
(ii) (+8) - (+17) = -9
(If a larger positive number is subtract from a smaller positive number, the result is a negative number).
(iii) (+9) - (-3) = 9 + 3.
(Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its corresponding positive number, i.e., its additive inverse).
(iv) (-6 - (-6) = 0 (Subracting a number from itself gives zero)
(v) (+7) - 0 = +7, (-8) - 0 = -8.
(Subtracting 0 from a number gives the same number).
Question 2.
Give your own examples of each rule. Class 6
Solution:
Note : Do as directed.
