Question 1.
Find the value of [latex]\frac{2}{3}[/latex] + [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] + [latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex].
Solution:
$\frac{2}{3}+\frac{3}{4}+\frac{1}{2}=\frac{8}{12}+\frac{9}{12}+\frac{6}{12}=\frac{23}{12}=1 \frac{11}{12}$
Question 2.
Find the value of 4[latex]\frac{2}{3}[/latex] + 3[latex]\frac{1}{4}[/latex].
Solution:
$\begin{aligned} 4 \frac{2}{3}+3 \frac{1}{4} & =\frac{14}{3}+\frac{13}{4}=\frac{56}{12}+\frac{39}{12} \\ & =\frac{95}{12}=7 \frac{11}{12} .\end{aligned}$
Question 3.
Michael finished colouring a picture in [latex]\frac{7}{12}[/latex] hours and Vaibhav finished colouring a similar picture in [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] hours. Who took longer time and by how much ?
Solution:
Michael time = [latex]\frac{7}{12}[/latex]
and Vaibhav time = [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex].
Now, [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{9}{12}[/latex]. Also, [latex]\frac{9}{12}[/latex] > [latex]\frac{7}{12}[/latex].
So, Vaibhav took longer time.
Time difference = [latex]\frac{9}{12}[/latex] - [latex]\frac{7}{12}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{2}{12}[/latex] hours.
= [latex]\frac{1}{6}[/latex] hours.
Question 4.
Mr. Rajan got a job at the age of 24 years and he got retired from the job at the age of 60 years. What fraction of his age till retirement was he in the job ?
Solution:
Number of years he was in job
= 60 - 24 = 36 years.
His age at retirement = 60 years.
So, required fractions = [latex]\frac{36}{60}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{3}{5}[/latex].
Question 5.
Nazima purchased 5[latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex] litres of juice and gave 2[latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] litres of juice to her friends. How many litres of juice is left with heir ?
Solution:
Juice left =
$=\left(5 \frac{1}{2}-2 \frac{3}{4}\right)$ litres
$=\left(\frac{11}{2}-\frac{11}{4}\right)$ litres
$=\left(\frac{22}{4}-\frac{11}{4}\right)$ litres
$=\frac{11}{4}$ litres
$=2 \frac{3}{4}$ litres.
