How do you draw these eyes with a compass? Class 6

Question 1.

Eyes

How do you draw these eyes with a compass? Class 6

Solution:

Part of the construction is shown. Observe it carefully. You will see two horizontal lines drawn lightly. In geometric constructions, one often constructs supporting curves or fiures that are not part of the given fiure but help in constructing it.

The technique to draw the upper and the lower curves of the eye is the same as that used in the fiure “A Person”. Points A and B are the locations where the tip of the compass is placed when drawing the curves of the eye. Note that the upper curve and the lower curve should together form a symmetrical fiure. For this to happen, where should these points A and B be placed? Make a good estimate

As regards placements of points A and B are concerned, these points must be taken on the perpendicular bisector of the line- segment forming the eye and also these two points must be equidistant from that line- segment. Obviously, these points will be placed on the opposite sides of the line-segment as already displayed in the figure.
