Question 1.
The letters of the word 'PEACE' are placed on cards. Leela draws a card without looking. Class 9

i. What is the probability that it is a P, E or C?
ii. What is the probability that it is not an E?
Solution:
i. Sample space S = {P, E, A, C, E}
Total number of outcomes = 5
Favourable outcomes = {P, E, C, E}
Number of favourable outcomes = 4
$\begin{aligned} \mathrm{P}(\mathrm{P}, \mathrm{E}, \text { or } \mathrm{C}) & =\frac{\text { Number of favourable outcomes }}{\text { Total number of outcomes }} \\ & =\frac{4}{5}=0.8\end{aligned}$
∴ The probability that letter is P, E or C is 0.8.
ii. Favourable outcomes = {P, A, C}
Number of favourable outcomes = 3
P(not E) = $\begin{aligned} & =\frac{\text { Number of favourable outcomes }}{\text { Total number of outcomes }} \\ & =\frac{3}{5}=0.6\end{aligned}$
∴ The probability that letter is not E is 0.6.
