Old Man at the Bridge Theme Of The Lesson
Through the story ‘Old Man at the Bridge’ the author Ernest Hemingway tell us to carry out our duty honestly and as our responsibility. As a herdsman, the old man feels it his duty to look after his animals. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, all peasant refugees and Republican soldiers with their belongings and weapons flee the advancing Fascist army. But the old man after walking 12 km with his animals gets exhausted and sits by the side of the road near a pontoon bridge that crosses a river. The narrator goes to the pontoon bridge to collect some information about the advancing Fascists where he meets the old man. Though the narrator persuades him to leave the animals there and escape from there by riding a truck, yet the old man does not leave the place leaving his animals in danger.
Old Man at the Bridge Short Summary
People leave the town San Carlos: During the Spanish Civil War, all people of the town San Carlos were told by the captain to leave the town because the Fascist army was advancing towards the town. All people except an old man left the town. The old man walks only 12 km: The old man walked 12 km with his animals and got so exhausted that he was unable to walk anymore. He sat by the side of the road.
The narrator meets the old man: The narrator was a war correspondent. He went to the pontoon bridge to collect information about the advancing Fascist army. While returning over the pontoon bridge, the narrator met the old man.
The old man’s affection for his animals: The narrator asked the old man to ride a truck and leave the town. But the old man told him that he could not leave the town leaving behind his animals. He further said that the cat could protect itself from the disaster, the pigeons would fly but he was worried about the goats who were not able to protect themselves.
The narrator urges the old man to go further: The narrator entreated the old man to get up and walk further. The old man stood up, swayed side to side and then sat down backward in the dust. He said that he could not think to go away leaving his animals in danger.

An old man with steel-rimmed spectacles and very dusty clothes sat by the side of the road.
There was a pontoon bridge across the river and carts, trucks, men, women and children were crossing it.
The mule-drawn carts staggered up the steep bank from the bridge with soldiers helping to push against the spokes of the wheels.
The truck ground up and away heading out of it all.
The peasants plodded along in the ankle-deep dust.
But the old man sat there without moving.
He was too tired to go any further.
स्टील रिम का चश्मा पहने हुए एक बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति मैले कुचौले वस्त्र में सड़क के किनारे बैठा था।
नदी के ऊपर एक पॉन्टून पुल था, जिससे होकर ठेलागाड़ी, ट्रक, पुरुष, महिलाएँ एवं बच्चे गुजर रहे थे।

It was my business to cross the bridge, explore the bridgehead beyond and find out to what point the enemy had advanced.
I did this and returned over the bridge.
There were not so many carts now and very few people on foot but the old man was still there.

From San Carlos’, he said, and smiled.

‘I was taking care of animals’, he explained. ‘On’, I said, not quite understanding.
Yes’, he said, I stayed, you see, taking care of animals.
I was the last one to leave the town of San Carlos.’

He did not look like a shepherd nor a herdsman and I looked at his black dusty clothes and his grey dusty face and his steel-rimmed spectacles and said, What animals were they?’ ‘Various animals’, he said, and shook his head.
‘I had to leave them.’ What animals were they?’ I asked.
“There were two goats and a cat and then there were four pairs of pigeons.’ ‘And you had to leave them?’ I asked. Yes.
Because of the artillery.
The captain told me to go because of the artillery.’

‘I was only taking care of animals,’ he said dully, but no longer to me.

It was Easter Sunday and the Fascists were advancing towards the Ebro.
It was a grey overcast day with a low ceiling so their planes were not up.
That and the fact that cats know how to look after themselves was all the good luck that old man would ever have.
