Activity 10.4 Let us investigate

Aim: To show that sound can travel through liquids and needs a medium.

Procedure: Submerge two metal spoons in water filled bucket and tap them against one another and listen to the sound produced. Sound of submerged spoon indicates that sound has reached ears after travelling through water and air.

Observation: This shows that sound can travel through liquids. If there were no medium, the sound would not be heard.

Conclusion: This shows that sound can travel through solids, liquids and gases. Sound cannot be heard in vacuum because there are no particles to carry vibrations.
