Activity 5.4 Let us describe a process

Aim: To study how salt crystals are obtained from seawater by evaporation.

Procedure:

Sea water is collected in large, shallow evaporation ponds, the heat of the sun and the action of wind cause the water to evaporate gradually, making the solution more concentrated. As evaporation continues, the solution becomes saturated and salt begins to crystallize out. These salt crystals settle at the bottom of the ponds and are then collected, washed, dried, and used.
