Activity 5.5 To separate the different coloured components present in black ink. Class 9
Activity 5.5
Aim: To separate the different coloured components present in black ink using paper chromatography.
Materials Required: Wide strip of chromatographic paper or filter paper, black sketch pen, Gas jar, beaker.

Procedure:
- Take a 3 cm wide strip of chromatographic paper.
- Draw a pencil line about 2 cm from the bottom of a paper strip.
- Place a small drop of water-soluble ink in the center cf the line and let it dry.
- Suspend the paper in a jar of water so the ink spot is just above the water level, shown in fig.
Observation:
As water rises, it carries the dye particles. Different colours appear at different height and speed as they separate.
Conclusion:
Paper chromatography separates the components of a mixture based on their different rates of movement in a solvent.
