Activity 5.6

Aim: To separate a heterogeneous mixture of mustard oil and water using a separating funnel.

Materials Required: Separating funnel, beaker, stand with a ring clamp, and the mixture of mustard oil and water.

Procedure:

  1. Pour the mixture of 5 mL mustard oil and 20 mL water into the separating funnel.
  2. Let the funnel stand undisturbed for some time. This allows the two liquids to form distinct layers.
  3. Place a clean beaker under the funnel's nozzle.
  4. Slowly open the stopcock (valve) to let the lower layer (water) flow into the beaker.
  5. Close the stopcock immediately when the oil layer reaches the bottom of the funnel.

Observation:

  1. The water and mustard oil do not mix, regardless of shaking.
  2. Water forms the lower layer because its density is higher than that of mustard oil.
  3. Mustard oil forms the upper layer as it is lighter.

Conclusion:

Mustard oil and water are separated based on the difference in their densities using a separating funnel.
