Activity 6.2 To Measure the Force of Friction

Aim: To measure the force of friction.

Procedure: Keep the spring balance on horizontal surface of wooden table top and cemented floor and attach the wooden block to the hook of spring balance.

Observations:

8 The reading of the spring balance gives an approximate measure of the force of friction acting between the surface of the block and the surface on which it moves, hence, reading of spring balance is different for different surfaces.

s Highest on rough surface (wooden table), lower on smoother surfaces (laminated surfaces) and lowest on very smooth surfaces (marble, tiles).

Conclusion: The reading of spring balance measures the force of friction acting between the surface of block and surface on which it moves. A smaller reading indicates smaller force of friction and larger reading indicates larger force of friction.


Question 1.

Force is applied on a moving box in forward direction which is equal to the force of friction acting between the bottom surface of the box and floor. Will box continue moving or come to rest after some time? Class 9

Answer:

Force is applied on a moving box in forward direction Force of friction opposes motion between the surfaces of two objects in contact and will act on box in backward direction.

Two forces equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. Therefore, net force acting on box is zero and according to Newton’s first law of motion, box will continue moving.
