Activity 7.3 Let us experiment
Aim: To determine if an inclined plane reduces the force needed to raise an object.

Procedure:
- Take smooth plank, toy car and attach the spring balance to the car.
- Make an elevated surface with pile of books. Lift the car vertically from floor to top of pile of books and note the reading of spring balance to measure the force required to lift the car vertically which is equal to the weight of car.
- Place the plank against the top of piles of books and pull the car along the plank slowly and note the reading of spring balance.
Observation:
The force required to pull the cart up the inclined plank (spring balance reading) is smaller than lifting it vertically. As the plank becomes less steep the force required decreases further. However, the distance over which the force is applied increases.
Conclusion: An inclined plane is simple machine that helps to move a load to higher or lower level. By making the inclined plane longer with shallower angle, we can reduce the effort required to move the object.
