Activity 9.3
Aim: To verify the law of conservation of mass by carrying out a chemical reaction between sodium sulfate and barium chloride solutions.

Procedure: Pour 10 ml of 1% m/v sodium sulphate solution in conical flask marked A. Pour 10 ml of 1% m/v barium chloride solution in conical flask marked B. Weight the total mass of conical flasks A and B. Transfer the solution from conical flask B to A and mix the two solutions. Weight the total mass of conical flasks A and B.
Observation: It is observed that there is no change in the total mass before and after the reaction. When solutions of sodium sulphate and barium chloride are mixed, white precipitate of barium sulphate and sodium chloride is formed.
Conclusion: Mass is conserved during the chemical reaction.
