Activity 9.5
Aim: To check the solubility of some compounds in water and organic solvents like kerosene and petrol.

Procedure: Take samples of camphor, sodium chloride, copper sulphate and naphthalene. Dissolve them in water, kerosene, petrol and note their solubility. Test the electrical conductivity of each sample in solid state and each sample after dissolving in water.
Conclusion: Ionic compounds like sodium chloride, copper sulphate are soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents like kerosene, petrol. Covalent compounds like camphor, naphthalene are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents like kerosene, petrol. Ionic compounds like sodium chloride, copper sulphate do not conduct electricity in solid state but conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Covalent compounds like camphor , naphthalene do not conduct electricity in solid state or when dissolved in water.
