Calculate the molecular mass of nitric acid (HNO3). Class 9

Answer:

Atomic mass of hydrogen = 1 u, nitric acid = 14 u, oxygen = 16 u

Nitric acid has one atom of hydrogen, one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of oxygen.

Molecular mass of HNO3 = atomic mass of H + atomic mass of N + 3 (atomic mass of O)

= 1 + 14 + (3 × 16) = 63 u


Question 2.

Calculate the molecular mass of methane (CH4). Class 9

Answer:

Atomic mass of carbon = 12 u, hydrogen = 1 u

Methane has one atom of carbon and four atoms of hydrogen.

Molecular mass of carbon dioxide = (atomic mass of C) + 4 (atomic mass of hydrogen)

= (1 × 12) + (4 × 1) = 16 u
