(i) At which of the given times is your shadow the shortest?

(ii) Why do you think this happens?

Answer:

(i) My shadow is shortest at 12.00 noon when the Sun is directly overhead.

(ii) This is because:

  1. The Sun's rays are falling down almost vertically on your overhead, the angle at which the light hits the ground is steep. So, the shadow is at its shortest.
  2. In the morning (9 a.m.) and afternoon (4 pm), the Sun's rays strike your body at a more oblique angle, which causes your shadow longer.
