What If (Page 12)

Question 1.

Mung bean seeds are kept in a concentrated solution after soaking in water for 12 hours? What will happen to them? Class 9

Answer:

After soaking in water for 12 hours, the seeds absorb water by osmosis and become swollen and plump, since water moves from the dilute surroundings into the more concentrated cell contents.

When transferred to a concentrated salt or sugar solution, the process reverses. The solution outside is now more concentrated (hypertonic) than the cell contents, so water moves out of the seed cells by osmosis. The seeds shrink, become wrinkled and limp, and any germination that had begun will stop due to dehydration of the cells.

Question 2.

A cell is kept in the salt or sugar solutions of different concentrations? Class 9
