Take a pause. Look at yourself and the things around you. What is the origin of each of them? At some point they all lead to Nature; even the plastic button on your shirt. (Page 3-4) Class 8

Answer:

Everything around us, whether man made or natural, originates from nature. Artificial materials like plastic are derived from crude oil; it's natural resources. Nature is the ultimate source of all our resources-from clothes to food to gadgets and furniture-and highlights our deep dependence on natural systems for daily living.

What might be the different criteria we can use to categorise natural resources?.

Answer:

According to the natural resources can be categorised using many criteria:


I. Basis of origin:

  1. Biotic resources are derived from living things, eg., forests animals.
  2. Abiotic resources are derived from nonliving things, eg., water, minerals.


II. Basis of renewability:

  1. Renewable resources can be naturally replenished eg., wind, sunlight.
  2. Non-renewable resources exist in finite quantities and take millions of years to form, eg., coal, petroleum.


III. Basis of Development:

  1. Potential resources present in a region but not yet fully utilised, eg., solar energy in deserts.
  2. Actual resources fully surveyed and currently used, eg., iron ore mined.


IV. Basis of distribution:

  1. Localised resources found only in specific places, eg., copper, gold.
  2. Global resources are found everywhere, eg., sunlight, air.
