What is the meaning of democracy? What is the difference between direct democracy. Class 6
Question 1.
Test yourself — What is the meaning of democracy? What is the difference between direct democracy and representative democracy? Class 6
Answer:
Democracy is the system of governance in which power is vested in the people, who rule themselves directly or through the system of elected representatives.
- Direct Democracy: In direct democracy, all citizens vote on every issue or law directly. This means everyone gets to express his/her opinion on every decision. An example is when a small group of students votes on where to go for a class picnic.
- Representative Democracy: In representative democracy, citizens elect their representatives. They discuss laws, problems and solutions in the assemblies and through dialogue and debate.
Question 2.
Recall the three organs of government. What are their different roles? Class 6
Answer:
The three organs of government are:
- Legislature: This is the part of the government that makes laws. It sometimes updates or removes existing laws. It discusses and passes laws in an assembly of representatives of the people that affect our lives.
- Executive: This organ carries out and enforces the laws made by the legislature. It includes the President, Prime Minister or Chief Minister, other ministers and any agency responsible for enforcing law and order. They make sure that the laws are followed and manage the day-to-day operations of the government.
- Judiciary: It is the system of courts which decides whether someone has broken the law and if so, what course of action should be taken, including punishment if necessary. Sometimes it also examines whether a decision taken by the executive is right or whether a law passed by the legislature is well conceived and fair to all.
