Different civilisations were found at different places and belonged to different periods and having diverse culture, that is why, civilisations studied in this chapter have several names.
The several names of civilisations are — Indus, Harappan, Indus-Sarasvati. It is one of the oldest civilisations in the world.
Significance:
- Town planning: There were big and small houses, warehouses generally made of bricks.
- Water management: The Harappan gave much importance to water management and cleanliness. They had wells made up of bricks, human made reservoirs and network of drainage system.
- Agriculture: They grew cereals, rice, pulses, cotton, spices, variety of vegetables and fruits.
- Domesticated animals: The Harappans domesticated animals for milk and meat.
A Brisk Trade: The Harappans were engaged in trade within and outside Indian sub-continent. They exported ornaments, timber, beads of carnelian, ivory comb, cotton, gold and imported copper.
Diverse crafts: The Harappans made various things with clay, stone and bronze.
Stones: Game boards, weights, seals, tools.
Bronze: Tools like chisel, things — mirror, statues — dancing girl.
