The Lady or The Tiger Theme Of The Story
→ The short story the Lady or the Tiger?’
by Frank Stockton centers on themes of justice, barbarism and jealousy. It is also a story about risk, civilization and generosity. This story is about justice. A certain king has a system of justice for those who perpetrate defiant acts. However, chance comes into play within this system. In this arrangement, anything can happen within the arena where the guilty and innocent are tried. Barbarism and civility take place through the very contest of the lady and the tiger as representations of what is punishment and barbaric, and what is good and civilized. Finally, the princess’s choice between a selfish act and an act of generosity represents the choice between our civilized and more barbaric selves. We are bound to face such situations in our everyday life.
The Lady or The Tiger Short Summary
The Semi-barbaric King:
He lived in ancient time. His ideas were loud and brutal. He had also learnt some good manners from his Latin neighbours. His ideas also influenced his decisions. In normal situations, he was bland and genial, but when the things went wrong he loved to correct them.
The Public arena:
The public arena was the symbol of his barbarism. The exhibitions of manly and beastly valor was the source of refinement and entertainment for his subjects. In his scheme of poetic justice crime was often punished and virtue was rewarded by the decrees of an impartial and incorruptible chance.
The two doors:
In the king’s scheme of administering justice the two doors were made. There was a lady behind one door and a tiger behind the other door. Crime and innocence was judged instantly. The accused was free to choose any one of the doors. If the tiger came out of the door, he used to tear the accused into pieces. When the lady came out of the door, the accused was often married with her immediately.
The Popular Institution:
The king’s method of justice was popular among the people. They did not know what would happen on the day of trial. The element of uncertainty used to make the trial interesting for the people. The thinking part of the community were helpless to bring about any change in the king’s design of administering justice. The fate of the accused was in his hand.
The princess:
The princess was like her father. She loved her father very much. She fell in love with a young man, who was brave and handsome, but he was below her status. This love affair moved on happily for many months. Unfortunately, one day the king happened to discover its reality. He did not hesitate to discharge his duty. The youth was immediately put into prison, and a day was appointed for his trial in the king’s arena.
On the Trial day:
The princess thought night and day about this great event and the various subjects connected with it. Possessed of more power, influence, and force of character she had done what no other person had done. She had possessed herself of the secret of the doors. She knew in which of the two doors stood the cage of the tiger and in which the lady waited. It was impossible for anyone to know the secret of the door, but the power of a woman’s will had brought its secret to the lady. The princess’ lover entered the arena and looked at her boldly. Without hesitation, she made a signal to the door on the right side. Her lover confidently went to the door and opened it.
The End:
The author leaves the end of the story hanging in the air. The readers are invited to think over the decision taken by the princess.

फेंक स्टॅक्टन रचित लघुकथा ‘नारी या बाघ’ जलन, बर्बता और न्याय की विषय वस्तु को केंद्र में रखकर लिखी गई लघुकथा है। इसके साथ ही इस कहानी मेंखतरा, उदारता और संस्कृति की गाथा है। मूलतः यह कहानी न्याय पर आधारित है। किसी राजा के न्याय करने का एक अनोखी ढंग था जिसके तहत कानून का उल्लंघन करने वाले को दंडित किया जाता था। इस तरह, एक बार न्याय-तंत्र के साथ खिलवार करने का मौका आ गया। उस राजा के इस न्याय व्यवस्था के अधीन कुछ भी संभव था जब एक दोषी और एक निर्दोष को न्याय के लिए सामने लाया जाता था। नारी और बाघ माध्यम सेभद्रता और बर्बरता को पूर्णतः स्थिर भाव से प्रदर्शित किया जाता था कि कौन सा अपराध बर्बर है और उसका दंड दिया जाना है तथा कौन सा कर्म अच्छा और सुसंस्कृत है। अंततः, राजकुमारी द्वारा उदारतापूर्ण एक कर्तव्य और एक स्वार्थपूर्ण कार्य के बीच चुनाव कर न्याय के रूप में हमारे सामने एक सुसंस्कृत व्यक्ति और कठोर दंडों को भोगता हुए एक दास बन कर आता था। हम सभी अपने दैनिक जीवन में ऐसी विकट परिस्थिति को भोगने के लिए तैयार रहते थे।
संक्षिप्त सारांश
अर्द्ध बर्बर राजा: पुराने जमाने में वह राज करता था। उसका विचार अत्यंत ही बर्बर और बल पूर्वक कोई कार्य कराने वाला था। लेकिन उसने अपने पड़ोसी लटिनों से कुछ अच्छे व्यवहार भी सीखा था। उसका विचार उसके निर्णय को प्रभावित करता था। सामान्य परिस्थिति में वह अत्यंत ही मिलनसार और प्रसन्नचित दिखता था लेकिन यदि कुछ गलत हो जाता तो उसे वह तत्काल सुधारना पसंद करता था। नागरिकों की दृष्टि में नागरिकों की दृष्टि में उसकी पहचान एक बर्बरता से पूर्ण व्यक्ति के रूप में था। मर्दानी और पाश्विक वीरता की प्रदर्शनी उसके मनोरंजन और किसी को पुरुष्कृत करने का विषय था। यदि कोई अपराध हो जाय तो उसके षडयंत्र पूर्ण काव्यात्म न्याय में दाषी को सजा होना तय था और उसे अपनी सजा कम करने के लिए उसे निष्पक्ष भाव से एक मौका दिया जाता था जिसमें उसे अपने-आप को ईमानदार सावित करना होता था।
दो दरवाजे : राजा के न्याय प्रबंधन के तहत दो दरवाज बनाए गए थे। इनमें से एक दरवाजे के पीछे एक नारि खड़ी होती थी तो दूसरे के पीछे एक बाघ होता था। अपराधी और निर्दोष दोनों ही व्यक्ति को उसी समय परखा जाता था। अपराधी को यह मौका दिया जाता था कि वह दो में से किसी एक दरवाजे को चुने। यदि दरवाजे के पीछे से बाघ निकलता था तो वह उसे टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर देता था। लेकिन यदि दरवाजे के पीछे से नारी बाहर आती थी तो उसे उससे उसी समय शादी करना पड़ता था।
लोकप्रिय संस्थाः राजा के न्याय करने की यह प्रक्रिया जनता में अत्यधिक प्रसिद्ध था। वे यह नहीं जानते था कि सुनवाई के दिन क्या होने वाला था। लोगों को सवई के दौरान अनिश्चितता की स्थिति उसे और भी अधिक रोचक बनाता था। राजा के इस न्याय व्यवस्था के स्वरूप को किसी भी परिस्थिति में बदलने में लोग अपने-आप को असहाय महशृश करते थे। दोषियों का भग्य उसके अपने हाथ में था।
राजकुमारी : राजकुमारी भी अपने पिता के जैसी थी। वह अपने पिता को बहुत प्यार करती थी। वह एक नौजवान व्यक्ति से प्यार करने लगी जो बहुत ही सुन्दर और बहादुर था लेकिन वह उसके स्तर से बहुत नीचे था। महीनों तक उनका प्यार खुशी-खुशी गुजरा। संयोग बस, एक दिन राजा ने उन दोनों के प्यार की सच्चाई को जान लिया। वह अपने कर्तव्य से तनिक भी विचलित नहीं हुआ। राजा ने उस नौजवान को केद कर तत्काल जेल में डाल दिया और उसके प्रति अपने न्याय व्यवस्था के तहत सुनवाई के लिए एक दिन तय कर दिया।
सुनवाई के दिन : राजकुमारी दिन-रात उस महत्त्वपूर्ण समय और इससे संबंधित विभिन्न विषयों के बारे में दिन-रात सोचती रहती थी। अत्यधिक प्रभाव, प्रभावी चरित्र और शक्ति से युक्त होने के बावजूद उसने वैसा क्या नहीं किया जो अन्य लोग नहीं कर सकते थे। वह उस दोनों ही दरवाजे के वारे में जानती थी कि किस दवाजे के पीछे बाघ का पिंजरा रखा जाता है और किसके पीछे औरत इंतजार करती रहती है। दरवाजे का रहस्य वाला यह गुप्त बात अन्य किसी को। मालूम नहीं था, लेकिन एक औरत के आत्मविश्वास की क्षमता ने उस नारी तक इस गुप्त रहस्य को पहुचा दिया। राजकुमारी का वह प्रेमी राजा के न्याय-क्षेत्र में जब प्रवेश किया तो उसने अपनी प्रेमिका को निर्भीकता के साथ देखा। बिना किसी संकोच के उसने अपने प्रेमी को दाई ओर के दरवाजे की ओर संकेत किया। उसका प्रेमी विश्वास के साथ दरवाजे के पास गया और उसने उसे खोल दिया।
समापनः लेखक ने कहानी को अधर में ही लटका छोड़ दिया है। उन्होंने राजकुमारी द्वारा लिए गए निर्णय पर गंभीरता से विचार करने के लिए पाठकों को आमंत्रित किया गया है।

Passage-1: (Page 91)
Long, long ago there lived a king who was crude and very much like a savage.
He had learned some manners from his Latin neighbors, but mostly he was barbaric, loud, and gruff.
He had none of the grace and polish of his neighbors.
He was a man of great fancies and even greater enthusiasm. Because he had so much authority as a king, he was able to force some of these fancies into reality.
Or at least he tried to.
His personality was normally calm when everything was in order
When there was a little hitch, however, he was exultant and happy.
He loved it when things went wrong because that meant that he could then correct them.
He loved to make the crooked straight, to crush down the uneven places in life.
बहुत पहले की बात है, किसी नगर का एक राजा था जो अभद्र था और अत्यधिक बर्बर व्यक्ति के जैसा था।
उसने कुछ अच्छी बातें अपने पड़ोसी लेटिनों से सीखा था लेकिन अत्यधिक बातों में वह अत्यंत ही उग्र, बर्बर और रूखे स्वभाव का था।
उसका अपने पड़ोसियों में न तो अच्छी छवि थी और न किसी प्रकार का सौहार्दपूर्ण व्यवहार ही था।

क्योंकि उसके पास राजा के अधिकार थे तो वह कुछ कल्पनाओं को वास्तविकता के धरातल पर उतारने के लिए किसी और को वाध्य भी कर सकता था। अथवा कम से कम प्रयास तो कर ही सकता था।
जब सब कुछ उसकी आज्ञा के अनुसार होता था तो उसका व्यक्तित्व सामान्यतया शांत प्रकृति का होता था।
जब भी कोई बाधा आती थी, वह किसी भी तरह आनंदपूर्ण और खुश रहता था।
वह इस बात को अधिक पसंद करता था कि जब कोई गलती हो जाती तो उसे वह तत्काल सही करना चाहता था।
यदि जीवन में किसी तरह का ऊँच-नीच हो जाता तो वह उसमें सुधार करना और धूर्त तथा बेईमान व्यक्ति को सीधा करना पसंद करता था।

It was not for beasts to fight each other to the finish.
It was not even for throwing religious heretics to the lions.
It was, he believed, for the purpose of widening and developing the mental energies of his people.
It was a vast amphitheater with encircling galleries, mysterious vaults, and unseen passages.
It was to be a means for poetic justice.
It was to be a place where crime was punished or virtue rewarded-all by chance.

उसका विश्वास था कि इस तरह का प्रदर्शन करने से उसकी जनता को वृहद पैमाने पर मानसिक क्षमता का विकास होगा और उसकी मानसिक दक्षता में चार-चांद लग जाएगा।
यह एक बहुत बड़ी रंगभूमि के समान होता था जो कभी न देखे गए अनुच्छेद की तरह पल-पल कौतुहल पैदा करता था और एक गोलाकार दीर्घा वाले रंगभूमि में प्रदशित होता था।
इस घटना को एक काव्यात्मक न्याय विधान के रूप में भी जाना जाता था।

When the king was interested in people and their crimes, he would dictate that their fate should be decided in the arena.
This king knew no traditions from other kingdoms.
His only allegiance was to himself and his own fancies.
This fancy, the chance-fate decision in the arena, came about because of his romantic, yet barbaric, idealism.
When all the people had gathered in the galleries and the king was seated on his throne high up on one side of the arena, he would give a signal.
A door beneath him would open, and the accused person would step out into the amphitheater.
Directly opposite the accused, there were two doors, exactly alike and side by side.
The person on trial had to walk over to these doors and open one of them.
He could open whichever door he wanted; he was subject to no pressure from the king or his court.
The only influence was that of fate or luck.

जब सभी नागरिक उस विशाल गोल दीर्घा में आ जाते थे और राजा भी उस दीर्घा के एक ओर अपने ऊँचे आसन बैठ जाता था तो वह निर्देश देता है। उसके पीछे लगा एक दरवाजा खुल जाता था और उससे अभियुक्त को उस रंगभूमि में सामने लाया जाता था।
अभियुक्त के ठीक विपरीत दिशा में दो दरवाजे खुलते थे जो एक-दूसरे से एकदम सटा और देखने में भी एक जैसा होता था।
जिस व्यक्ति की सुनवाई होती थी उसे इन दरवाजों के पास आना होता था और इनमें से किसी एक को खोलना होता था।
वह उसी दरवाजे को खोलतस जिस दरवाजे को खोलना चाहता था, खोल सकता था और इसके लिए राजा की ओर से कोई दवाब नहीं होता था।
यही उस अभियुक्त का भग्य अथवा ईश्वरीय विधान माना जाता था।

If the accused opened one door, a hungry tiger came out.
It was the fiercest and most cruel that could be found, and it immediately jumped on him and tore him to pieces as a punishment for his guilt.
When the fate of the criminal was thus decided, sad iron bells were rung, and great wails went up from the hired mourners who were posted outside the arena.
The audience went home with bowed heads and doleful hearts, sad that one so young and fair (or so old and respected) should have merited such a fate.

दर्शकगण भी उदास मन से वहां से अपने-अपने घरों को बोझिल हृदय के साथ, उदासी भरे शब्दों में बातें करता कि एकदम सही और नौजवान था (अथवा बहुत बूढ़ा और सम्माननीय था), वहइस तरहकी सजा दी गई, आदि सोचता जाता।

If he opened the other door, a lady came out.
The king always chose the ladies himself.
He made sure that each was of the same age and station as the accused and that she was beautiful.
The rule was that the accused was to marry her immediately.
It didn’t matter if he were already married and had a family.
The lady was a sign of his innocence, so if the accused already loved another, that other was to be forgotten.
It was the king’s way.
He allowed nothing to interfere with his design.
Indeed, immediately after the lady appeared, another door beneath the king opened, and out came a priest, musicians, singers, and a troupe of dancers.
In a procession, they all cheerfully marched and sang for the couple standing in the middle of the arena.
The bells rang, the audience shouted its approval, and the innocent man, preceded by children strewing flowers in the couple’s path, led his new bride to his home.

यह बात कोई मायन; नहीं रखता था कि वह व्यक्ति पहले से ही शादीशुदा है और उसका अपना एक परिवार भी है।
वह औरत उसके निर्दोष होने का प्रमाण थी, अत: यदि वह दोषी व्यक्ति पहले से किसी अन्य स्त्री को प्यार करता था तो उसे भूलना पड़ता था।
यही राजा का मार्ग था। वह राजा यह कभी पसंद नहीं करता था कि उसके द्वारा निर्धारित प्रक्रिया में किसी तरह से हस्तक्षेप हो।
वास्तव में उस नारी के निकलने के तत्काल बाद राजा के पीछे का दरवाजा खुलता और उससे एक पंडित, वाद्ययंत्र बजाने वाला, गाने वाला और नाचने वालों का दल बाहर आता।
एक झुंड में, वे सभी आपस में मिलकर उस दीर्घा के बीच में खड़े दोनों की जोड़ी के लिए उसके चारो ओर घूम-घूम कर नाचते, गाते।
घंटी बजती और वहां उपस्थित दर्शक गण अनुमोदन की मुद्रा में जोर से चिल्लाते और वह निर्दोष व्यक्ति अपनी जोड़ी के साथ बच्चों द्वारा बिछाये जा रहे फूलों वाले मार्ग से नए दुल्हन के साथ बढ़ते हुए उसके घर तक जाते।

This was the king’s semibarbaric method of administering justice, and its fairness is obvious.
The criminal could not know which door the lady was behind.
He opened whichever door he wanted to without knowing whether in the next instant he was to be eaten or married.
On some occasions, the tiger came out of one door, and on other occasions, it came out of the other.
In this system, there was instant punishment for guilt and instant reward for innocence whether the accused wanted the reward or not.
There was no escape from the judgment of the king’s arena.
राजा के प्रशासन के अधीन न्याय करने का यह अर्द्ध बर्बर तरीका था और इसमें प्रायः स्पष्ट न्याय हो जाता था।
अपराधी को इस बात का पता नहीं होता था कि किस दरवाजे के पीछे औरत है।
इस बात की जानकारी के बिना कि वह जिस दरवाजे को खोलने की उसकी इच्छा है, उसे पर वह ग्रास बन जाएगा या फिर उसे विवाह करना पड़ेगा।
कुछ अवसर पर एक दरवाजे को खोलने पर बाघ निकल आता था और किसी अन्य अवसर पर दूसरे दरवाजे से वह निकलता।
इस प्रक्रिया में दोषी को तत्काल सजा मिल जाता था और निर्दोष को तत्काल पारितोषिक मिल जाता था चाहे वह दोषी सजा चाहता हो या नहीं।
राजा के न्याय विधान से बच कर निकल पाने का कोई रास्ता नहीं था।

When the people gathered together on one of the trial days, they never knew whether they were to witness a bloody slaughter or a festive wedding.
This element of uncertainty usually made the occasion more interesting than it would have been otherwise.
The people were entertained, and no one doubted that justice was being served.
All believed that the accused had his fate in his own hands.
यह संस्था एक अत्यंत ही प्रसिद्ध संस्था बन गया थ।
लोग जब किसी भी सुनवाई के दिन वहां जमा होते थे तो उनमें से किसी को यह मालूम नहीं होता कि वे आज किसी बर्बर रक्तरंजित हिंसात्मक घटना के मूक दर्शक यानि गवाह बनेंगे या फर विवाह समारोह का भागीदार।
यही एक मात्र अनिश्चितता का वातावरण इस समारोह को और भी आकर्षक बनाता था जैसा कि किसी अन्य तरीके से यह नहीं हो पाता।
लोगों का इस आयोजन के माध्यम से भरपूर मनोरंजन होता था और किसी को इस बात का शक नहीं होता कि न्याय नहीं किया जाएगा।
सभी का विश्वास था कि अभियुक्त का भाग्य उसके अपने हाथों में है।

As is the case in many fairy tales, this daughter, the apple of her father’s eye, was in love with a young man who was below her in status.
He was a commoner.
He was also brave, handsome, and daring, and he loved the royal daughter with all his being.
The princess had enough barbarism in her that their love affair was dramatic ………………………. too dramatic.
It was a secret for months, but then the king found out about it.
उस अर्द्ध बर्बर राजा की एक बेटी थी जिसे वह अत्यधिक प्यार करता था।
वह अपने पिता के समान थी और उसे अत्यधिक प्रेम करती थी लेकिन स्वभाव से वह अत्यंत ही भावुक, सौन्दर्य प्रेमी और सशक्त भी थी।
जिस तरह कि अनेक परिवारों में कहानियां होती है, वह बेटी जो अपने पिता के आंखों का तारा थी, एक नौजवान से प्रेम करने लगी, जो उसके स्तर से नीचे का था।
वह एक सामान्य आदमी था।
हालांकि वह भी आकर्षक, सुन्दर, बहादुर, साहसी और निडर था, और उसके पास जो कुछ था, उसके साथ ही वह राजकुमारी को बेहद प्यार करता था। राजकुमारी में भी बर्बरता कूट-कूट कर भरा था कर भी उन दोनों का प्रेम नाटकीय …….. और अधिक नाटकीय ढंग से आगे बढ़ रहा था।
यह प्रेम प्रसंग कई महीनों तक तो गुप्त तरीके से चलता रहा पर कुछ समय बाद राजा को इसके वारे में पता चल गया।

They all knew of the king’s interest in the case, and there was excitement in the air.
The king’s men searched for the fiercest tiger in the realm.
They also searched for the fairest maiden in the land so that he could have a fitting bride in case he were found innocent.
Of course, everyone knew that he had committed the ‘crime’ of loving the princess, but the king did not allow the facts of the case to alter his decision.
The trial would go on as planned.
The youth would be gone no matter what happened; he would either be dead or married.
The king could enjoy the proceedings for the sport of it.
राजा ने क्षण भर के लिए भी संकोच नहीं किया।
उसने उस युवक को तत्काल जेल में डाल दिया और दीर्घा में सार्वजनिक सुनवाई के लिए एक दिन तय कर दिया।
जब वह दिन आया तो उसके राज्य के हर नागरिक उस सुनवाई में भाग लेना चाहता था।
उस मामले में हर कोई राजा की इच्छा को जानता था और इस बात को लेकर चारो ओर कौतुहल का बाजार गरम था।
राजा के कर्मचारी दुर्दान्त बाघ की खोज में बड़ी उत्सुकता के साथ लगा था। वे एक सुन्दर नारी को भी अपने राज्य में ढूंढ रहे थे इस उद्देश्य से कि यदि वह निर्दोष सि) हो जाता है तो उसके अनुकूल उसे पत्नी मिल जाय।
निश्चय ही, हर कोई यह जानता था कि उसने राजकुमारी से प्रेम करने का ‘अपराध’ किया है लेकिन राजा अपने निर्णय में किसी प्रकार का घोल-मेल के लिए किसी भी हाल में तैयार नहीं था।
सुनवाई तय समय सीमा के तहत शुरू हो गया।
वह युवक भी क्या होगा? क्या वह मारा जाएगा या फर विवाह होगा, इस बात से बेपरवाह था।
राजा भी उस सुनवाई में निष्पक्ष भाव से आनंद लेने लगा।

Half the audience did not know that one so attractive had lived among them; no wonder the princess loved him! How terrible for him to be there!
The princess had thought about this trial day and night for a long time.
She knew she couldn’t bear to miss the spectacle, but there was another reason for her being there.
She had such power, influence, and force of character (as well as plenty of gold) that she did what no one had ever done before; she found out the secret of the doors for that day.
She knew in which room stood the hungry tiger and in which waited for the lady.
She knew, too, that the doors were so thick that there was no way anyone could ever hear some hint from behind them.
If she were going to warn her lover, she would have to do it by a signal.
वह दिन आ गया। लोग उस दीर्धा के हर कोने में खड़े थे।
सभी उस क्षण का बड़ी उत्सुकता के साथ इंतजार कर रहे थे कि वह क्षण कब आएगा।
राजकुमारी के प्रेमी को उस सभा में लाने के लिए दरवाजा खोलने का संकेत दिया गया।
भीर की सांसें तेज हो गई।
वह बहुत सुन्दर था।
आधे दर्शक तो यह नहीं समझ पा रहे थे कि इतने सुन्दर और आकर्षक छवि वाले युवक को जो उन्हीं के बीच रहने वाला है, राजकुमारी ने उससे प्रेम करके कोई गुनाह नहीं किया है।
उसके लिए यह कितना भयावह है! उस स्थान पर लंबे समय से राजकुमारी उस सुनवाई के बारे में दिन-रात सोचती रहती थी।
वह जानती थी कि वह अपने आंखों की उस ज्योति को खोने का दुख सहन नहीं कर पाएगी, लेकिन इसका एक और कारण था जिसके चलते वह वहां उपस्थित थी।
उसके पास ऐसी शक्ति, मामले को प्रभावित करने की क्षमता और नैतिक बल (यहां तक कि पर्याप्त मात्रा में सोने) था कि वह वैसा सब कर सकती थी जैसा कि इससे पहले कोई नहीं कर पाया था (यहां तक कि उस दिन के दरवाजे के गुप्त रहस्य को भी उसने जान लिया था।
वह जानती थी कि किस कमरे में भूखा दुर्दान्त बाघ है और किस कमरे में एक कन्या प्रतीक्षा कर रही है।
वह यह भी जानती थी कि दरवाजे इतना मोटा है कि उसके पीछे से यदि किसी को कोई संकेत भी दिया जाये तो उसे कोई भी नहीं सुन पाएगा।
यदि वह अपने प्रेमी को कुछ संकेत देना चाहे तो इसके लिए उसे संकेत का सहारा लेना पड़ेगा।

It was as plain as if he had shouted it.
There was no time to lose; the quick question had to be answered just as quickly so that the king would not suspect.

वह उस लड़की को जानती थी कि वह उसके पूरे राज्य की सबसे सुन्दर नारियों में से एक थी।
वह उस नारी से करत करती थी और उस घड़ी से भी कि उस समय क्या होगा।
जब उस अभियुक्त को राजसी बक्से (केदियों के पिंजरे) में।
डाल कर घनुषाकार झुकाया गया।
जो वहां का रिवाज था, तो उसने एक मात्र राजकुमारी को देखा और उसने सारी बातें तत्काल जान लिया।
उसने राजकुमारी से उम्मीद पाल रखा था कि उसे दरवाजे के रहस्य पता होगा और अब उसने यह जान लिया था कि उसके पास इसका उत्तर है।
यह एक मात्र उसी पर निर्भर था कि वह उसे बताए।
अपनी तेज नजरों से उसने उससे पूछा, किसमें? यह उतना ही स्पष्ट था जितना कि वह आवाज देकर पूछता।
उनके पास खोने के लिए एक पल भी नहीं था, उसके द्वारा तीव्रता से पूछे गए प्रश्न का उत्तर भी उतनी ही तेजी से सावधानी के साथ मिला कि राजा को किसी भी तरह से संदेह नहीं हो पाया।

Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was upon him.
Without hesitation, he went to the door on the right and opened it.
Did the tiger come out of that door, or did the lady?
The more we think about this question, the harder it is to answer.
It involves a study of the human heart which leads to mazes of passion, love, hate, and excitement.
Do not answer this for yourself, but put yourself in the place of the princess.
उसके सामने रखे हुए तकिए के ऊपर उनका दाहिना हाथ आराम से रखा था।
उसने इसे सीधा उठा लिया और दाहिनी ओर में एक छोटा परन्तु अत्यंत तेज गतिविधि के की।
किसी और ने नहीं बल्कि उसके प्रेमी ने इसे देखा।
दीर्घा में हर किसी की आँखें उसी पर थीं।
वह घूमा और दृढ़ विश्वास के साथ तेज कदमों से जो स्थान खाली था उसमें चलने लगा।
वहां उपस्थित सभी लोगों के हृदय की घड़कन रूक गया, जिसने जो सांस लिया था वहीं अटक गया और हर किसी की आंखें उसी पर आकर टिक गई। बिना किसी हिचक के वह दाईं ओर के दरवाजे पर पहुंचा और उसे खोल दिया।
क्या उस दरवाजे से बाघ निकला या फिर कोई नारी?
जितना अधिक हम इस प्रश्न पर विचार करते हैं इसका उत्तर भी उतना ही अधिक मुश्किल होता जाता है।
यह तो मानव हृदय के अध्ययन से जुड़ा विषय है जो जटिल
भावनाओं, प्रेम, करत ओर उत्तेजनाओं से जुड़ा है।
इसका आप अपने अनुसार खुद उत्तर न दें बल्कि इसका उत्तर उस राजकुमारी के स्थान पर अपने-आप को रखकर दें।

In her mind she had screamed and torn her hair when she saw his happy face at opening the door to the lady.
Her soul burned in agony as she saw him rush to that woman and then be wedded in the next moment when all about her were joyous.
She lived through the misery of the procession, the happy couple, the singing and dancing, the shouts of the crowd, the laughter of the wandering children.
Her tears, of course, were lost in all the joy.

हालांकि यह महज एक सपना था फिर भी उसने अपने ही हाथों से अपने चेहरे को उस क्रूर दृश्य के भय से किस तरह से ढक लिया था।
लेकिन उस समय उसे कितना अच्छा लगा जब उसने उसे दूसरे दरवाजे के सामने खड़ा देखा।
किस तरह वह अपने मन ही मन चिल्लाई थी और उसने अपने बहुत से बालों को तोड़ कर फेंक दिया था जब उसका प्रेमी उल्लासित भाव से उसे नारी का दरवाजा खोला था।
उसका हृदय अत्यधिक वेदना से व्यथित हो गय था जब उसने अपने प्रेमी को देखा कि वह अगले ही क्षण उस नारी से विवाह करेगा और हर कोई उसके लिए आनंद मनाएंगे।
वह खुशी से झूमते नवदम्पति, उसके सम्मान में होने वाले नृत्य और गायन, साथ चलने वाले लोगों का जुलूस और आनंद मनाते चीखते-चिल्लाते लोग, रास्ते में फूल बिछाले, हंसते, खिलखिलात और अठखेलियां करते बच्चों से सजे उस मनोरंक दृश्य से स्वयं को पहुंचने वाली वेदना के कारण वहां से उठ कर चली गई।
सभी की खुशी के बीच में उसकी आंसू निश्चय ही कहीं खो गई।
