Question 1.
A small pump can fill a tank in 3 hours, while a large pump can fill the same tank in 2 hours. If both pumps are used together, how long will the tank take to fill? Class 8

Solution:
Part of tank filled in 1 hour by small pump = [latex]\frac{1}{3}[/latex] and part of tank filled by large pump in one hour = [latex]\frac{1}{6}[/latex].
So, part of tank filled by both the pumps together in 1 hour
= [latex]\frac{1}{3}[/latex] + [latex]\frac{1}{6}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{2+1}{6}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{3}{6}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex]
So, the tank will be full (1), is
1 ÷ [latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex] = 1 × [latex]\frac{2}{1}[/latex] = 2 hours.
