Below are some statements. Think, explore and find out if each of the statement is 'Always true', 'Only sometimes true' or 'Never true'. Why do you think so? Write your reasoning; discuss this with the class.

(a) 5-digit number + 5-digit number gives a 5-digit number

(b) 4-digit number + 2-digit number gives a 4-digit number

(c) 4-digit number + 2-digit number gives a 6-digit number

(d) 5-digit number - 5-digit number gives a 5-digit number

(e) 5-digit number - 3-digit number gives a 2-digit number

Solution:

(a) Only sometimes true. For example, 44,443 + 55,554 = 99,997 is a 5-digit number and 87,250 + 21,319 = 1,08,569 is not a 5-digit number.

(b) Only sometimes true. For example, 9,843 + 239,866 is a 4-digit number but 9,998 + 21 = 10,019 is not a 4-digit number.

(c) Never true. 9999 + 99 = 10,098 gives a 5-digit number.

(d) Only sometimes true. For example, 98,789 - 87,678 = 11,111 is a 5-digit number but 99,896 - 97,185 = 2,711 is a 4-digit number.

(e) Never true. As 10,000 - 99 = 9,901 is not a 3-digit number.
