Using this understanding of multiplication of many integers, can you give a simple rule. Class 7

Question 1.

Using this understanding of multiplication of many integers, can you give a simple rule to find the sign of the product of many integers? Class 7

Solution:

Yes. If number of negative integers is even, the product will be positive and if number of negative integers is odd; the product will be negative.

Question 2.

Now, consider the expression 5 × (4 + (- 2)). As in the case of positive integers, is this expression equal to 5 × 4 + 5 × (- 2)? Class 7

Solution:

Yes, equal to 10.

Question 3.

Check if the distributive property holds for (- 2) × (4 + (- 3)) (that is, if this expression equals (- 2) × 4 + (- 2) × (- 3)), and for a few other such expressions of your choice.

What do you observe? We see that the distributive property seems to hold for integers, as well. Will this always happen? Class 7

Solution:

Do as directed.

Yes. For example, (-3) × (5 + 8) = -3 × 5 + (-3) × 8 = -39, etc.; yes.
