Placing Dates Chronologically :
(i) If King Chandragupta was born in 320 CE, which century did he belong to? And how many years was that after the Buddha’s birth? Class 6
Answer:
King Chandragupta was born in 320 CE, which means he belonged to the 4th century CE (between 300 to 400 CE).
The Buddha was born in 560 BCE. The time difference between 320 CE and 560 BCE is 879 years (560 + 320 - 1 = 879).
(ii) Rani of Jhansi was born in 1828. Which century did she belong to? How many years was that before India’s Independence? Class 6
Answer:
Rani of Jhansi was born in 1828, which means she belonged to the 19th century BCE (1800s).
India gained independence in 1947. The number of years between 1828 and 1947 is 119 years (1947 - 1828 = 119).
(iii) Turn ‘12,000 years ago’ into a date. Class 6
Answer:
If we consider the current year as 2024, then 12,000 years ago would be 9977 years (12000 - 2024 + 1 - 9977, which is 9977 BCE).
[Note : Just for understanding : To calculate the number of years between BCE date and a CE date, you add them and subtract 1. Because there is no zero between them.
28 CE 0 2CE 2 + 2 - 1 = 3 years
Now it is a reverse case, so we add one year.]
