If there is such abundance of water on the planet, why is there so much talk of ‘water scarcity’ or a ‘water crisis’?
Answer:
The oceans together hold 97.5% of the Earth’s water. This is salty and unfit for most of land animals including humans. Only 2.5% fresh water makes Earth’s water resources.
Factors contributing to water scarcity include :
- Pollution of freshwater sources.
- Wasting of water during usage.
- Over-Extraction of groundwater.
- Climate change affecting rainfall patterns.
- Population growth leading to increased demand for water.

What ways of saving water are you aware of? Which ones have you seen practised at home, at your school, and in your village, town or city? Class 6
