Question 1.

Mark the following statements as true or false; explain your answers with a sentence or two. Class 6

(1) All parallels of latitude have the same length.

Answer:

False. All parallels of latitude do not have the same length. The length of a degree of latitude decreases as you move from the Equator towards both the North and South poles.

(2) The length of a meridian of longitude is half of that of the Equator.

Answer:

True. Equator is in the centre of the East. It cover full circumference of the Earth. The meridians of longitude are half circle running from one pole to the other. So, the length of meridians of longitude is half of that of Equator.

(3) The South Pole has a latitude of 90°S.

Answer:

True. The latitude from North pole to South pole measures 180°. Equator is half way latitude 0°.

So, latitude at South pole is 180° ÷ 2 = 90°S.

(4) In Assam, the local time and the IST are identical.

Answer:

True. Since Assam is eastern state of India, the local time in Assam and Indian standard Time (IST) are identical.

(5) Lines separating the time zones are identical with meridians of longitude.

Answer:

False. The lines separating time zones are not identical with meridians. Time zone boundaries respect each country’s standard time and international border rather than the meridians.
