The Big Questions (Page 41)

Question 1.

What are the major types of landforms and their significance to life and culture? Class 6

Answer:

There are three major types of landforms: mountains, plateaus, and plains.

Mountains: Mountains are much higher than the surrounding landscape. They are important because they provide resources like minerals, fresh water, food, wood, medicine and climate. Many people live in the mountains, and they often have unique cultures and traditions. Mountains are also popular for tourism, as people enjoy activities like hiking, mountaineering, paragliding and skiing. The Himalayas are not only beautiful but also sacred to many people in India.

Plateaus: These are flat areas that are raised high above the surrounding land. Plateaus have two types of land, rocky soil and black soil. Black soil is more fertile than rocky soil. They are rich in minerals and deposits. They have been called storehouses of minerals. Diamond and gold are found in African Plateau. In India, in Chhota Nagpur Plateau are found huge reserve of iron ore, coal and manganese. People living on plateaus may have different life-styles and cultures compared to those in the plains or mountains.

Plains: These are flat or gently undulating surface. Plains are very important for agriculture because they usually have rich soil that is good for grhwing crops. Plains also support a variety of flora and fauna. Many cities are built on plains because they are easy to travel on and have plenty of resources. The Ganga plain in India is one of the most fertile areas and supports a large population.

Question 2.

What are the challenges and opportunities of life associated with each landform. Class 6

Answer:

Mountains:

Challenges: Living in the mountains can be tough because of harsh weather, like heavy snow and cold temperatures. It can also be hard to get food, water and other supplies since the terrain is steep and difficult to navigate.

Opportunities: Mountains offer beautiful scenery and opportunities for tourism. Some tourists also go to mountains for sports, such as paragliding, skiing, hiking and mountaineering. People have also travelled to these uplands for pilgrimages to holy sites. These are their main sources of income.

Plateaus:

Challenges: Plateaus can have limited water supply, lack of transportation, lesser fertile land. This makes it hard for people to grow crops or raise animals. The weather can also be extreme, with hot summers and cold winters.

Opportunities: However, plateaus often have rich mineral resources, which can be mined. Plateaus have many waterfalls. These water-falls attract the tourists. This is source of income for the people of this region.

Plains:

Challenges: Some plain areas experience flooding, especially during the rainy season. Soil erosion can also be a problem, which can affect farming. Recently pollution is also a problem in the plains.

Opportunities: Plains are ideal for agriculture, which means people can grow a lot of food. This makes it possible to build houses and multi-storey buildings this leads to larger populations and the development of cities. The flat land also makes transportation easier, which is good for trade and travel.
