The Big Questions (Page 7)
Question 1.
What is a map and how do we use it? What are its main components? Class 6
Answer:
A map is a representation or drawing of some areas — it may be a small area ( a village, a town etc.), a bigger area (say, your district or state) or a very large area like India or even the whole world.
We use it for finding location, distance, boundaries, routes, size and shape etc. of a place.
There are three important components of maps — distance, direction and symbols.
Question 2.
What are coordinates? How can latitude and longitude be used to mark any location on the Earth? Class 6
Answer:
Latitude and longitude are the two coordinates.
The location of a place on the Earth can be precisely defined with the help of latitudes and longitudes grid.
Question 3.
How are local time and standard time related to longitude? Class 6
Answer:
Local time is defined as a location’s position in relation to Earth’s rotation. A shift in time zone of one hour occurs for every 15 degrees in longitude.
Standard time zones are created using longitudinal divides to keep time constant throughout global regions.
