Question 1.
Calculate and write the answer using scientific notation: How many ants are there for every human in the world? Class 8
(i) How many ants are there for every human in the world?
(ii) If a flock of starlings contains 10,000 birds, how many flocks could there be in the world?
(iii) If each tree had about 104 leaves, find the total number of leaves on all the trees in the world.
(iv) If you stacked sheets of paper on top of each other, how many would you need to reach the. Moon?
Solution:
(i) 2 × 1016 ÷ 8.2 × 109
=[latex]\frac{2}{8.2}[/latex] × 107
= [latex]\frac{200}{820}[/latex] × 107
= [latex]\frac{10}{41}[/latex] × 107ants.
(ii) Number of flocks = 1.3 × 109 ÷ 10000
= 1.3 × 105.
(iii) Number of leaves = 3 × 1012 × 104
= 3 × 1016.
(iv) 26 folds of sheet = (226-1)2 = (225)2= 250 sheets.
Question 2.
If you have lived for a million seconds, how old would you be? Class 8
Solution:
[latex]\frac{1000000}{60 \times 60 \times 24}[/latex] = about 11.6 days
= 12 days (approx.)
