Question 1.
Calculate and write the answer in scientific notation:
(i) If each person in the world had 30 pieces of clothing, find the total number of pieces of clothing.
(ii) There are about 100 million bee colonies in the world. Find the number of honeybees if each colony has about 50,000 bees.
(iii) The human body has about 38 trillion bacterial cells. Find the bacterial population residing in all humans in the world.
(iv) Total time spent eating in a lifetime in seconds.
Solution:
(i) 30 × 8 × 9 = 240 × 109 = 2.4 × 1011
(ii) 100 × 50000 million honeybees= 5 × 106 million
(iii) 38 × 8 × 109 trillion= 304 × 109 trillion = 3.04 × 1011 trillion bacterial cells
(iv) 30 × 60 × 109 seconds= 1800 × 109 seconds = 1.8 × 1012
seconds, assuming that a person takes half an hour per day for taking meals.
Question 12.
What was the date 1 arab/1 billion seconds ago?
Solution:
Number of days 1 arab/1 billion ago
= [latex]\frac{10^9}{60 \times 60 \times 24}=\frac{10^7}{36 \times 24}[/latex]
= 1.157 × 104 days
= 11570 days
= [latex]\frac{11570}{365}[/latex] years = 31.7 years
The date will be in the month of approximate June of the year 2026 - 31 = 1995.
It may be May 1995 or June 1995 or July 1995.
