Question 1.

The Earth travels approximately 940 million kilometres around the Sun in a year. How many kilometres will it travel in a week? Class 8

Solution:

940 million ÷ 52 = approximately 18 million kilometres in a week.

Question 2.

A mason is building a house in the shape shown in the diagram. He needs to construct both the outer walls andthe inner wall that separates two rooms. To build a wall of 10-feet, he requires approximately 1450 bricks. How many bricks would he need to build the house? Assume all walls are of the same height and thickness. Class 8

Solution:

Length along which walls are to made = 12ft + 9ft + 9ft + 6ft + 9ft + 6ft + 9ft + 12ft + 15ft + 9ft + 12ft

= 108 ft

For 10 ft, bricks required = 1450

So, for 108 ft, bricks required = [latex]\frac{1450}{10}[/latex] × 108

= 145 × 108

= 15660
