Looking at the map (Fig. 3.7) (see textbook), can you identify a few mountain passes or desert areas that Xuanzang had to cross while travelling between China and India?

Answer:

Xuanzang travelled from China to India and crossed several challenging terrains. He went through the Gobi Desert, which is vast and dry. He also crossed the Taklamakan Desert, known for its harsh conditions. Additionally, he navigated the Hindu Kush mountains and the Himalayas, which are high and rugged, making his journey very difficult.

Can you also identify a few important Buddhist centres of learning that Xuanzang visited in India? Do you know something of their significance?

Answer:

Xuanzang visited several significant Buddhist centres in India. One of the most important was Nalanda, a famous university where many scholars studied Buddhism and philosophy. Another key site was Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Vikramashila which was founded by the ruler Dharmapāla, this university was another significant centre for Buddhist studies.
