These images (Figure on Page 50) depict a few challenges that people living in the mountains may face. Discuss them in groups in the class and write one paragraph on each. Also discuss why, despite many such challenges, people still choose to live in the mountains.

Landslide: A landslide is when a large amount of earth or rock suddenly falls from a mountain. This can happen after heavy rain or earthquakes. Landslides can block roads, destroy homes, and cause loss of family, livestock, or crops. People need to be careful in these places where there is a possibility of a landslide.

Flash Flood: A flash flood is a sudden, intense flood that can occur after heavy rainfall or a cloud burst in mountainous areas. The water can rise very quickly, making it hard for people to escape. Flash floods can damage homes, wash away roads, and even cause injuries. People living in the mountains need to be aware of weather warnings to stay safe from flash floods.

Uncontrolled Tourism: Uncontrolled tourism means that too many visitors come to the mountains without proper management. This can lead to pollution, damage to the environment, and over-crowding. It can also put pressure on local resources like water, food, and traffic congestion. Overcrowding of tourists affects the culture and climate of the local plain.

Avalanche: An avalanche is when a large amount of snow, ice, or rocks suddenly falls from a mountain slope. This can be very dangerous for people living or traveling in the mountains. Avalanches can destroy homes and block roads, making it hard for people to get help. Those living in mountainous areas need to be aware of the signs of avalanches and take precautions.

Heavy Snowfall: Heavy snowfall can block roads and affect supplies. Snow can also cause roofs to collapse. The movement or various activities slow down or stop during heavy rainfall. There is an increased chance of an avalanche during heavy snowfall.

Cloudburst: A cloudburst is a sudden, heavy rain in a very short period of time. In mountainous areas, this can be especially dangerous because the steep slopes can cause water to rush down quickly. Cloudbursts can cause flooding, destruction of crops, and loss of human and animal life.

Cold Weather: Cold weather in the mountains can be very harsh. It can lead to freezing temperatures, which can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. People need to have warm clothing and heating in their homes to stay safe. Cold weather can also make it difficult to grow food and access resources.

Despite these challenges, many people choose to live in the mountains because:

1. Fresh air: Air is, to a great extent, free from polluting gases and dust particles. It increases their healthy life and reduces respiratory diseases.
2. Natural beauty: There is natural beauty and no sound or light pollution, but a peaceful life.
3. Outdoor activities: In the mountains, the outdoor activities are different from those in other landforms, such as climbing, skiing, paragliding, and hiking.
4. Tourism: The mountain region attracts people, so they spend a lot of money there. Tourism enriches their economy. Hindus believe that bathing in rivers can cleanse sins and lead to heaven.
