Solution:

Let after x years, their age ratio will be 1 : 2

So, (1 + x) : (5 + x) : : 1 : 2

or [latex]\frac{1+x}{5+x}=\frac{1}{2}[/latex] = or 2 (1 + x) = 1 (5 + x)

or 2 + 2x = 5 + x or 2x - x = 5 - 2 or x = 3.

That is, after 3 years, there ages will (1 + 3) and (5 + 3) years or 4 and 8 years in the ratio 4 : 8 = 1 : 2.
