Look at a map of India given at the end of this book. Identify the climate for these cities-Leh, Chennai, Delhi, Panaji and Jaipur.

  1. Is the place near the sea, in the mountains, or in the desert?
  2. How do these factors affect the climate there? Class 7

Answer:

1. Leh: Located in the mountains (Himalayas). At high altitude the air density decreases and the air gets less dense, it gets cooler. The Sun heats the Earth's surface, the mountains are farther away from the surface, so less heat air will be there. Leh has a cold desert climate with long, harsh winters and short summers.

2. Chennai: This city is near the sea (Bay of Bengal). Sea absorbs heat slowly and loses heat slowly. That is why, it experiences hot temperatures and high humidity, with a significant monsoon season.

3. Delhi: Situated inland. Delhi is far away from sea, mountains and desert, the climate depends upon these factors. It experiences hot summers, cold winters, autumn, spring and pre-winter monsoon season.

4. Panaji: This city is near the sea (Arabian Sea). Sea absorbs heat slowly and loses heat slowly. That is why, it enjoys warm temperatures and heavy rainfall during the monsoon.

5. Jaipur: Located in the desert. Jaipur has hot and dry summers and mild winters. It receives less rainfall compared to coastal cities.
